Dual display setup - VGA and DVI

I’m attempting to set up dual monitors from a video card that has VGA and DVI outs. Regular monitor is on the VGA, and from the DVI I have a DVI —> HDMI cable running to a TV.

When I connected the DVI->HDMI I expected the second display to automatically be detected. When it was not, I tried to force it to detect a new display, which it did not.

If I disconnect the VGA and restart, it finds the TV and displays on it beautifully.

How can I get Windows to recognize both at the same time and enable the dual display options?

Hardware info— all I can find on the video card is that is a 128 MB display controller with a n NVidia chip…no model #. I haven’t had the chance to open the tower up and look at the card itself.

No need to open the tower, just right-click the Desktop, select Screen Resolution, and go to Advanced Settings.

I don’t remember exactly what it said (not at that comp now) but it didn’t give me much more information than that it was generic video hardware…

So you’re not using the Nvidia driver but the VESA driver? I don’t think that supports dual displays. Go to Nvidia’s website, download their latest driver, and install it.

Go into the control panel, then device manager. Expand ‘display adapters’. It should give you the make and model.

Ok, I let NVidia auto detect my device and driver, and came up with this:

go to this link - Official Advanced Driver Search | NVIDIA

product type = legacy (near bottom of drop down menu)
product series = geforce 4 ti series
product = geforce4 ti 4600

then fill in the other information.

you’ll note that there are no drivers for any home OS after XP or any server OS after 2003.

Ah…so basically, there is no driver available that will work on Win7?

Not directly, but this thread on Sevenforums shows that you can get the older drivers to work. Whether they have dual monitor support, I don’t know.

Did you make sure your card can handle dual inputs? Some older cards had both slots, but could only use one at a time. I find it odd that your display wasn’t mirrored, even without a proper driver–as my display always mirrors even before the drivers load.

Cool, I am going to try a 3rd party driver tonight and see what happens…

It should support both, but it actually didn’t occur to me to check…got used to it being assumed  Should have known better since it’s an older card.

Hell with it, I’m just going to replace the card.

An recommndations for a cheap AGP card with dual outputs? This machine is basically an internet/Netflix box, no taxing games will be played on it.

If it matters, the motherboard is an Asus P4P900 se.

Something I can pick up this weekend at Wal-Mart or Best Buy etc. would be nice, since I’m an impatient effer, but I’d order off Newegg if it was appreciably cheaper.

I very much doubt that you’ll find any AGP cards in the shops as they’re so old; you’ll have to go online. You’ll want a Radeon HD 38xx or HD 4670.

I so did not take that into consideration…

It gave me an idea, though…I dug around my box of old parts and found a Radeon 9800 Pro that’s gathering dust. ATI says it’ll work with Win7 even though it’s not officially supported.

Huummmm, the problem? Wanted to install it yesterday, so I grabbed a screwdriver and prepared to take the cover off the case. No screws? That’s odd, guess I’ll just open it! It’s stuck. look more closely wtf…a lock? The fucking side cover is LOCKED? :dubious:

Seriously…it has a latch, and one of those round-keyed locks. Who locks a computer? Particularly, one made out of Frankensteined 10 year-old parts?

I supposed the answer is my g/f’s dad. I’ve never seen such a thing.

I checked the ASUS site and there is no P4P900 se but they do have a P4P800S SE motherboard (socket 478, P4). I’m assuming that’s what you meant.

Here is the link to dl the updated bios, manual, etc.

Here is a direct link to the manual.

In addition to the AGP slot, you have 5 PCI slots.

Here are the options for PCI video cards at NewEgg sorted by price to give you some idea of what’s out there.

edit: honestly, I would check ebay first for something used. I’m sure you can get something decent for cheap. If you go AGP, remember that your slot is 8x/4x (see manual).

Have you made sure that Displayswitch (which I find in the Accessories folder of Windows 7) is set in the appropriate way?

:smack: The words “this threadon Sevenforums” were supposed to be a link: http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/11517-help-driver-geforce-4-mx-440-agp8x-4.html.

Even if you do buy a replacement card instead, it still might be fun to try and see if you could get it to work.

Take the end off a Bic pen, use a sharp knife to cut some small slits vertically, maybe 1/4" long in the end. Them jam that into the lock and twist. Should do the trick.

Update: finally got around to this. Part of the delay was that I never got motivated to try to mess with the lock.

Well over the weekend, the g/f said that she was going to monkey around and see if she could get it open. So, she looked at it for a minute, reached out, slid the latch forward, and off came the side cover. :smack: The whole time, I had been pulling it outward because it looked like a lever.

You might thnk that one with mechanical and reasoning skills such as these has no business sticking his hands in a compter case! You may have a point, but I did it anyway…

I installed the Radeon 9800 and Catalyst drivers with no problem (or very minor problems, anyway).

I now have dual displays running (cloned) on the monitor and TV.

Still a question, though! If I have the tv on the input from the computer when I start the computer, everything works ok. If it switch input on the TV to, say, another HDMI where the cable comes in, and switch back to the HDMI where the computer display is coming in, it doesn’t detect any input.

Is there any way to tell the TV '“Hey! Look for the computer again” or is it the opposite problem…telling the video card that there is another available display again?
