Dumbass hunters at the range: Fuck you.

Been there, done that, got called a terrorist

Yep, I’ve had hunter call me a terrorist because I own an AK-47, and I’ve had a range (which was run by good ol’ boy hunters) make up new unwritten rules about rapid fire etc., that only applied to me, and blame me for things I did not do. I quit going to that range ASAP.

<rant>Its no wonder those guys can’t comprehend rapid fire, considering the huge sniper rifles they shoot and the fact that most of them only shoot once a year to sight in for hunting season. </rant>

Some people are just assholes, and the only thing you can do is avoid them. It sucks and its not fair, but these days, when a gunowner can get in a lot of trouble based only on an anonymous false accusation, you just can’t be too careful about who you annoy - even when they have absolutely no right to be annoyed. Don’t forget that these assholes are also probably clueless about gun laws, so there’s a fair chance that someday they will be in a jam and need someone to accuse, know what I mean?
Luckily for me there’s lots of ranges around here so I quit that one as soon as they started giving me a hard time, and found one where they’re into practical shooting. Its a lot more fun and educational anyway, because they have tactical rifle classes, hi-power matches etc.
BTW, the rapid fire the good ol’ boys objected to was a 5.56 AK.
Ya gotta love these small caliber carbines especially for rapid fire. One of my coolest shooting experiences ever was at my tactical carbine class at the new range. One night after class we were plinking at steel targets, and I had that AK with a red dot sight. With no recoil, the sights just stay on target - ping ping ping ping… I put a whole mag on the steel as fast as I could pull the trigger, easy as can be. And since it was dark, they all struck sparks off the steel.

Hmm, which .223 AK was it?

And what red dot sight? Kobra?

Also, do you get the same sort of “What do you need THAT for? You can’t hunt with that.” BS from hunter types all the time, too?

It’s a Romanian SAR3, with a Kobra.

I love the rifle dearly - it’s my SHTF gun for sure - but the Kobra isn’t so great. Not only does it go through batteries about as fast as I go through ammo  , the battery contacts corrode and its tough to clean the inner one. Also the dot is large and blurry, which is fine for CQB but not for 200 yards or more (we’ve shot out to 400 yards… I admit I missed some at that range!).

I’ve also heard stories of the Kobra mount cracking. So one of these days I’m going to get a Trijicon or an Aimpoint, and Kvar’s weaver rail that goes on the Russian quick-disconnect side rail.

No, they never used those exact words to me. But I’ve heard lots of other black rifle shooters who’ve encountered that.

Senior, I feel your pain. My closest (good) outdoor range is 75 miles from me!

I wrote the National Association of Shooting Ranges and am currently looking into getting a club together in NW indiana and buying/starting our own range, members only. Contact the NASR and they’ll send you some great information about this sort of thing.

Myself, I’m a longshot kind of guy. I like to practice early or late, and I don’t like anyone to watch me or be around. If you have a good cold shot people think you’re some kind of nutbag in training- I had a guy who asked me what my aim was like from a clocktower- so it’s not just the full-auto types who get hassled. I actually just like to make little holes in paper.

The AK47 sounds fun- I’ve shot a Thompson, which was a riot, but the AK is a sweet machine. Best of luck. Keep the muzzle down.

I spent a large part of yesterday trying to diagnose my friend’s sar-3. The damn thing has the most amazing variety of feed problems you can imagine.

Yesterday, it started doing this fun little thing where the bolt carrier was hitting cartridges in the magazine on the way back from the chamber, so they got thrown out the ejection port. That means after evey shot, an empty case AND a live shell would eject from the ejection port at the same time.

Sounds like you got a good one, in any case. Did you have to fix up the hammer, or what? My friend had to order a custom made hammer because the geometry was totally wrong.

Oddly enough, I gave him one of my 5.45 bakelite mags to use, and so long as he kept it loaded at 20 rounds or under, it worked with perfect reliability - something his mags (converted bakelite, and bulgarian .223 waffle mags) never did.

So, out of curiosity, I tried his waffle mags in my rifle, and they worked fine. So he wanted to trade his $13 nice black poly mags for me $4 bakelites.

Anyway, did you have to do anything to fix the sar-3 up or did you get lucky?

I was shooting a sar-2, btw. I got lucky as hell. Matching, decent wood - everything was straight, reliable as hell. Well, actually, I’ve had 4 failures over 1200 rounds - but they were almost all user error of some variety. Riding the charging handle, installing the bolt incorrectly (It actually fired several dozen rounds correctly with a bolt that wasn’t put on the locking grooves correctly), and a double feed or two when using the mag as a monopod (and putting quite a bit of force on it).

Did you get it from doug/tantal? Out of curiosity, how’d you find out about them?

Also, there’s a new model they started importing a few months back that beefs up the rail on the weaker points, so the potential snapping problem is fixed. I think the batteries might last longer too, but I can’t recall offhand.

I wanted a kobra, but I’m not sure I can throw down the money. I’m thinking now of getting a mojo peep sight from redstararms.com, or a krebs custom peep sight.

I’ve also heard stories of the Kobra mount cracking. So one of these days I’m going to get a Trijicon or an Aimpoint, and Kvar’s weaver rail that goes on the Russian quick-disconnect side rail.

I didn’t hear those words exactly, either, but I’ve heard the same basic thing a few times.

Anyway, sorry about the random hijack of my own thread, but it’s always nice to have some quality AK talk with someone.

The only feed problems I ever had was when trying to use a bakelite mag, especially when it was full. The right mags are the steel Weiger mags which you can get from Interordnance (they’re not on the website, you have to call and ask). These mags work 100% perfectly.

I know what you’re talking about about the hammer, but I think that was mostly on the early (1999) models, mine is a 2000 and its fine. It has a really sweet trigger too. One of the cool things about AKs, (and ARs) is that its so easy for anyone to do their own trigger work, but mine was already fine.

I really should buy several of these guns to stash away. They’re such a bargain.

Out of several thousand rounds, the only failures I’ve had were:
the bakelite mag

three failures to fire which were probably just bad ammo

one user error when the charging handle hit my right thumb. I’m a lefty and I was prone and thus holding it just ahead of the mag.

one empty shell (some cheap brass, not steel) stuck in the chamber - I don’t know what caused that.

Yes, I got the sight from Tantal, and I found out about it, and him, on AK-47.net. I haven’t been reading or posting there for some time though.

Oh yeah, actually I did once have someone ask me (but in a nice way) about hunting with an AK. I told them that yes, some people do, why else would they make 5 round mags for them?

I’ve heard that SKS are popular among those who can only afford one rifle for hunting and defense. Of course they’re not as cheap now as they were…

Actually, 7.62x39 is roughly ballistically equivelant to .30-30, and and even slightly superior. They do hunt with them. But I don’t bother to point that out, because I don’t need to “justify” myself by meekly claiming “…but I can hunt with it.”

Actually, I probably couldn’t hunt with mine very well. It would tend to really rip up the meat. They called the 5.45 ‘the poison bullet’ in Afghanistan for it’s nasty terminal effects.
