I’ve been keeping my blog for about a year now. Up until this point, I’ve been using Blogger to maintain it. But over the last week or so I’ve been orbiting the idea of migrating to Movable Type. I feel like I’ll probably make the Big Jump soon. But before I commit, I thought I’d see what the TM had to say about it. My reasoning has been thus:[ul][li]I’m tired of the weird (yea, buggy even) behavior that has cropped up since Blogger’s recent upgrade. If I want double-posts, I can come here. :D[/li][li]Some of my readers are clamoring for a ‘comments’ function.[/li][li]I’m looking to add other sections to my site and use MT to create dynamic call-outs thereto. (Like…oh, the titles of the last book reviews I’ve posted.)[/li][li]The ability to pick up the first couple lines from the latest entry and put it on the homepage would be nice.[/li][/ul]So? Anybody out there got an opinion on MT? How hard is it to configure and use? I’ve whomped my way through cgi installation beforesee my site’s photo gallery, for instanceand know my way around HTML and CSS just fine. Am I asking for trouble, or is MT the Answer?
My mom switched from Blogger to MT for some of the same reasons, and it was very successful. Sorry I don’t have better advice, but I know it worked for her.
I use it on my blog. It’s easy to use, I haven’t found any serious bugs, and I’m very happy with it. I especially like the plugin feature. I only wish that it wasn’t written in perl (which I seriouly dislike), and that it had a better backup solution.
Also, if you plan to enable comments, beware of comment spam! It’s the new scourge of the blogging community. Keep monitoring your latest comments.
Urrrgh. Yeah, I’m aware of the potential hassle inherent in a comments feature, butfor nowI’m willing to try this anyway.
God help me.
You can get comments and all that jazz at www.livejournal.com, which requires little to no set up. The only downside is the slight cost, if you can’t find someone to give you a code.
True enough. In fact, I have an LJ username, so I can keep up with the various Dopers who hang out there. But I already have a domain of my own, and I want to be able to keep all my stuff under one roof. I update the LJ blog every month or three just to say “hi, still alive, see my website for more.”
