Dumping the WTC rubble in the ocean: Will that hurt the environment?

Just curious. I’ve seen photos of barges loaded with metal, cement, and so forth that’s already been cleared, so I assume it’s going into the Atlantic. Will that pollute the ocean any further, or cause the sea level to rise, or anything like that?

Actually, it’s not being buried in the ocean. They are transfering it all to a defunct (sp) dump, with an ironic name I can’t recall at this time…and being sorted through for plane parts and body parts they may have missed.

This according to NBC news a couple of weeks ago.

I thought the barges were transporting the debris to Staten Island where it’s being carefully sifted for evidence.

Oh. Well, good, then!

The ironic name you’re thinking of, techchick, is Fresh Kills. Here’s a recent news story about removing the WTC rubble.

Thanks Teach, I couldn’t, for the life of me, remember the name. I guess I didn’t want to remember as it’s so weird.

They showed the second teams, on NBC, a while back, going through the rubble at the “Fresh Kills” site and it left a frightened imprint on my mind. I couldn’t imagine having to go through it all in such detail to make sure that those on the site didn’t miss anything.

(As a side note:) It breaks my heart to see our world have to deal with such a horrific thing. I cry most every day over the new stories of loved ones lost and those found. I can’t imagine, not one freakin bit, what it would be like to be there. I can’t, fathom it, not one bit.

Luckily I am more resiliant than I have ever been, I have to believe that somewhere, somehow the God I believe in made me stronger almost a year ago to face this tragedy. If it had hit 4 months earlier, I would have been a basket case.

Sorry, I needed to let that out but in either case, thank you for clarifying the dump site…I will never forget that name now.

Pardon me here, damn smilies, there weren’t 'sposed to be smilies in that post.

I turned off smilies for you. Seeing a smilie right before you say “it breaks my heart” was unsettling

There is some discussion (in the Times Monday, I think) that Battery Park Authority would like to expand Battery Park City north by using WTC debris as fill.
This is not drastically different from the way BPC was originally created (using fill excavuated during the construction of the WTC and surrounding buildings)

As has been mentioned above, the rubble is not being dumped in the ocean.

However, to answer the rest of the OP, it would not necessarily be a bad thing if it was ultimately dumped in the ocean, so long as the dump site is carefully chosen. Old bridges and similar structures are occasionally buried at sea to form “artificial reefs.” Such reefs help enhance fisheries, and are popular diving spots.

Do a Google search for “artificial reefs” and you will find more info.

Also, short of melting the ice caps, there is little that humans could do that would cause sea levels to rise. Certainly not by dumping anything at sea.
