I heard today that the thousands of tons of rubble is carried to a landfill in Long Island. Never having been to Long Island, I am interested in knowing where there is room to dump all the rubble and Manhattan garbage in general. Someone told me that all cement is transformed into gravel; another told me that biodegradable garbage is dumped into the ocean about 20 miles out at sea. Can any of you enlighten me as to the facts? Thanks in advance.
No, the rubble from the WTC is going to a landfill on Staten Island, which is different. As far as there being room for it–it’s an island, and they’re enlarging it at the edge with the landfill, slowly but surely.
Concrete rubble from general road repair, as opposed to the rubble from the WTC, is usually broken up and re-used by the highway department involved in the road repair.
And yes, New York City’s garbage, as opposed to the rubble from the WTC, is towed out to sea on garbage scows and dumped.
I was under the impression that cruise ships were NOT allowed to dump their garbage at sea…If that is true, why is it okay for New York Garbage to be dumped at sea?
I’m closing this thread because this topic has been dealt with recently. I direct any remaining unanswered questions to the earlier thread, What is done with wreckage/debris?
