Dungeons of Daggorath

Inspired by the “what was your first computer thread”. The thread got me thinking about my second computer, which was a Radio Shack Color Computer. One game I remembered clearly was The Dungeons of Daggorath. It was “3-D” wire-frame dungeon crawler (graphics were similar to the very first wizardry game) that was really ahead of it’s time. The game was entirely in real time, with no way to pause it. You didn’t use the directional arrows to control your character, you had to type in commands, although you could abbreviate them. A L for Attack with Left hand, M for Move forward, T R for Turn Right, and so on. The game didn’t have health bars, but featured a beating heart. Swinging your weapon, getting hit by creatures, and moving very far very fast would get your heart beating faster. If it got too fast, your heart would burst and it was game over. There were only 5 levels, but they were pretty large, and due to the real time format, the game was pretty intense. I mapped the whole thing out with graph paper, managed to get to the last level, but couldn’t kill the last boss.

Anyhow, the thread inspired some serious nostalgia for this game, and I became curious as to how to beat it. I remember trying for weeks, if not months, and just couldn’t beat that last guy. So I did a google search, and found a download of the original game that had been converted for windows (apparently with the original developers blessing). If you’ve played this, or just want to see how we kicked it old school, go check it out!. Note: The page with the link to version 0.5 has been taken down (no random dungeons, noooo!), but version 0.4 can be downloaded, and it’s awesome.

Holy crap. I had this game, but could not remember the name. Thanks!

HEY!

I remember that game…I even beat it!

Same as all tough monsters…kill all the weak ones first leaving only the tough one. Find a long hallway…then wait until he is right in front of you…attack 1-2 times then run like hell down the hallway turnaround and repeat.

With the last guy you have to repeat…and repeat…and repeat…and repeat…andd repeat…and you get the idea. It takes a long time to beat him.

I spent hours in childhood playing this game. I never did defeat the wizard.

I found this one weekend when I was working, and my officemate (a child of the 'Nineties) was suitably amused by my nostalgia for what was considered a pretty groundbreaking game for the day.

The reason I never beat it:

I had 2 enchanted rings (Vulcan and Rime). On level 3, you encounter the false Wizard. When you defeat him, you’re teleported to level 4 with only the items in your hands. So Ihit him with 2 blasts from one ring, dropped it and put the other in my hand along with my sword. I then killed him with a blast from the remaining ring. I’m teleported to level 4 with a sword and a ring with 2 charges on it. I clear level 4, get to level 5 and find no other rings except a gold one (useless). I blasted the real Wizard with both remaining charges on my ring. It didn’t kill him, and I didn’t have any other rings or anything else that could kill him. I’d whacked him dozens of times with the sword, and no luck. I’d killed everything else on level 4 and 5, so I just gave up. I got a Commodore 64 shortly afterwards, so I never went back and tried to figure it out.

I never finished it.

The first machine code I wrote was something along the lines of Dungeons of Daggorath.

I also purchased a text adventure set in a pyramid when I bought Dungeons of Daggorath. At that time I could map text adventures in my head and get around fast so i loved playing it. I finished the pyramid mummy one.

You may also remember Klandathu and Zaxon for the Color Computer.

I’ve been trying to remember the name of the equivalent computer system sold in England.

The English version was the Dragon computer.

You have to whack him much more than that. I think I did the long tunnel thing for over an hour…possibly 2 hours.
