A big fort? Did the Navy take care of things, what?
I couldn’t find a picture. But both sides ran barriers out into the sea deep enough that a soldier couldn’t wade to them. They then ran back parallel to the shore for some short distance (100’), so no end run could be made around them.

The germans had defenses all the way up the coast, because its an obvious move for the allies to invade from the sea , in order to rush over open ground
