The election was brought on because the leading far-right populist (Wilders/PVV) collapsed the government it had been allowed to lead, because the other parties wouldn’t accept all of his proposals. And the election results show a considerable set-back for him.
Still one of the largest parties, but losing a third of their seats. The chief gainers are D66 (centrists), now neck and neck with the PVV, and the mainstream conservative/Christian Democrat CDA, with smaller gains for a couple of minor far-right parties. The left-wing Green/Labour (GL/PvdA) and to a lesser extent the mainstream liberal conservatives (VVD) also lost support.
Looks like a clear rejection of the last government and Wilders and the PVV in particular
Now the processes of consultation and negotiation to form a government start to grind….
