As always, he’s opinionated, but the writing is excellent and interesting. So if you’re wondering what the deal is with those funny Dutch and their gazillion political parties, what the Queen is doing or where Wilders is coming from, check it out.
some of you in the web programming/design community may know him from his many articles on JavaScript and browser technologies.
Interesting. I find his forecast (which puts PvdA and CDA back up on top with 30-35 seats each, and Wilders with as little as 10-15) intriguing - somehow I believe it might work out this way, and that PvdA (Labour) might benefit from the current cabinet crisis, but I’m not sure how. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking :D. Anyway, there’s the 3 March municipal elections first, and I would not be too surprised if that caused some heads to roll in PvdA or maybe even CDA (they badly need to get rid of Balkenende). Again though, it might be wishful thinking.
We should keep this thread as a Dutch politics thread for the coming months - there’s plenty of us on the SDMB to justify this - and it’s interesting enough outside NL too I suppose. Also, I yearn for some astute and insightful political discussion about my own country.
We shall see about his forecast. Personally I hope for even more seats for D66.
Anyway, for the US readers out there; note that when he’s using the term “liberal” to describe the VVD, that doesn’t mean “socialist” or anything like that, but what Wiki calls ‘classical liberalism’, which is the way the term is still used in the Netherlands - more in line with what’s seen as the traditional goals of the Republican party in the US (limited government, free markets).
Delano Felter, leader of the “Republican Modern Party” in Amsterdam has made the news by stating, on camera no less, that as far as he’s concerned, homosexuals in Amsterdam should be kicked out of the city.
This is probably not going to go down well with the majority of Amsterdam citizens. Though I doubt many of them had even heard of the party until now.
