Going to visit my cousin whose Dutch relatives are visiting. What is the traditional version of “nice to meet you” in Holland?
Aangenaam kennis te maken.
Also the correct response to someone who says “dank u wel” (thank you) to you is “alstublieft” (please).
[sub]yes, our surname was originally Mercotijn[/sub]
Pronunciation, please?
Dank u wel!
Alstublieft!
I have one slight clarification, which I confirmed with a Dutch friend.
Kennis should rhyme with tennis.
AHN-guh-NAH-muh KEN-nis tuh MAH-kuh
Well, it went just fine. My cousin (actually cousin’s ex-wife) translated for everyone. Her uncle is 90 and was in the Dutch resistance during WWII. Pretty spry for someone that age.
