I just got my first iPod this week, and know almost nothing Can anyone help me with any of the following?
I have a lot of music DVDs. I don’t really care much about the video with such a tiny screen, but I sure would like to rip the audio tracks and add them into my music library so I can shuffle them with all my other music. How?
How do I stop iTunes from loading certain songs to thr iPod, without removing the songs from the library? I thought unchecking the box to the far left would do it, nut I was wrong.
Alternatively to q2, I want the vast majority of my songs to play routinely in shuffle songs mode, but ther are some that I don’t – some classical, some very old jazz and blues, etc. It would be nice to keep them on the ipod itself, of course.
Do I need to create a playlist with almost everything (but my exceptions) in it, and other playlists for my exceptions, and shuffle the lists? Or is ther some simpler way to achieve the same goal?
With the iPod connected go under the Music tab. Check the box next to Selected playlists and then check the boxes next to the playlists you want to update automatically.
What platform? And (forgive my ignorance) is there a “music DVD” format out there, or are you referring to normal movie DVDs that happen to be DVDs of concert etc footage and you want the music therefrom?
On the Mac I’d use MPEG Streamclip to convert the movies in the VIDEO_TS folder to normal .mov movies, after which I’d open them in QuickTime Player (I have QT Pro enabled) and export the audio as AIFF and then compress it to my chosen compressed audio settings (in my case VBR / highest quality) and then it’s ready to stick on the iPod.
If I were doing a lot of that, I might rummage around for a shareware app that would do more of that in one step, but those are the apps I currently already have.
There was another thread a while ago that mentioned Audacity and Audio Hijack. I downloaded both. I’ve only ripped one song (Pico And Sepulveda, from The Forbidden Zone), and I don’t remember which tool is which. I was successful getting an audio segment that contained the song, but when I tried to use the other tool to edit the ends all I got was static. I haven’t had a chance to play with it since then. But at least I have the song, albeit with the ‘ends’ attached.
I don’t know if music DVDs have a different format, The are structured a little differently, In general their tracks correspond to each song. And I definitely want each song from them to be listed and separately playable. But these differences don’t necessarily mean a different recording format AFAIK.
So far I have been using iPods default audio format to rip my CDs. Don’t know whether having some songs in the library recorded with different schemes than others would cause a problem.
Otto, so far I have done nothing with playlists except create one to see how it is done.
So far I just have about 1400 songs, not assigned to any playlists.
BTW, what’s the deal with a playlist called “Party Shuffle” which I see when looking at the library in the PC? It doesn’t appear on on my ipods list of playlists, though all the others do, even the list i created.
