Just got a new Ipod and have been playing with it a lot. But I have a question – all the beginner’s guidelines show you how to import your music CDs into Itunes and then sync it with your Ipod. But it doesn’t show you how to import movies and TV shows from DVDs. Or aren’t you supposed to be able to do it?
It isn’t terribly easy. Apple wants you to buy their stuff from the iTunes store, not upload stuff you already own for free…
If you have a Windows machine, see here. If you have a Mac, try this one.
That site will be your friend.
If you have windows and need more detailed help, I can try to help…I’ve had some success with the methods in the link.
yeeeaahhh… you’re not supposed to do that. The video iPod is meant to play purchases from the iTunes music store or other videos on your HD in a compatible format.
That said, do a Google search for (Instant) Handbrake.
Oh, and also – it really chews up the RAM. It’s WAY more intensive than ripping a CD, and takes a rather long amount of time (ripping to the hard drive, then converting to the appropriate format, then importing it into iTunes, then syncing it with the iPod). Best bet is to queue up several to go while you’re at work or asleep.
Thanks for the info. I don’t want to go into any not legal areas, so let’s leave it at that.
I’m not entirely sure how it’s any less legal than ripping your music CDs to put on the iPod. I guess you’re not supposed to break the encryption on the DVDs in order to rip them, but then, not all DVDs have encryption, I don’t think.
There is no way to do this from within iTunes. This is not Apple’s fault - the problem is that, in order to extract the content from pretty much every commercial DVD, you have to break the encryption - which is technically illegal.
The Digital Millenium Copyright Act made breaking copy-protection encryption illegal. CDs don’t have any encryption, but if they did, ripping them would be illegal as well.
It’s true that some DVDs aren’t encrypted - but the vast majority of them are, and it’s not easy to tell which ones aren’t. Apple likes consistency - if they can’t support all DVDs, they don’t want to support any.
Okay, so this is about regular audio features of the Ipod. I’ve put a bunch of stuff from my CD collection on there, and I also subscribed to a bunch of public radio podcasts. Problem is, when I sync my Ipod, the podcasts don’t appear under the “podcasts” menu. They’re all categorized as if they’re songs. How do I move them over?
Did you subscribe to them through iTunes or did you go to the respective sites and pull them down individually?
I subscribed through Itunes.
(Sorry I can’t answer yet, I have more questions…)
In iTunes: Do the podcasts show up in the “Podcasts” section in the source pane on the left?
On your iPod, when you talk about the “Podcasts” menu, are you talking about the automatic one that is there automatically, or a playlist you created and called “Podcasts”? (I’m assuming it’s the former, but it’s worth asking just to be sure."
On your iPod, is there anything in the automatically created “Podcasts” menu?
Create a playlist called “My Podcasts” or somesuch, and put them in there.
Good suggestion. I’ll try that. Thanks.
Even easier would be to create a smart playlist with “Kind is ‘Podcast’” and set it to live updating. Then they should automatically jump in that playlist.
