DVD Easter Eggs

Why are the little hidden goodies in DVDs called “Easter Eggs?” Who coined this term?

Because Easter eggs are little hidden goodies.

I’m not sure what you are referring to specific to DVDs, but software has has Easter eggs for ages. If you Google on “software easter eggs” you’ll probably find some sites that list all kinds of things, like a simple flight simulator in Excel.

Don’t know if the term can be traced to a point source.

For what it’s worth, it was at least in common usage by the mid to late 80’s in computer games/software.

I don’t know who coined the term, but I believe that the name derives from the Easter Eggs that Faberge created for the Russian Tsars. They would open to reveal a delightful surprise. I heard this term first used on computer software, then later on DVDs.
