Easter Eggs on DVD

I’d assume from the term that “Easter eggs” are neat little “extras” on a DVD, but what are they specifically? I mean, you click your button and highlight different things on the DVD menu, and then you can select them. But “Easter egg” implies that they are hidden. So are they not something on the menu? If not, where are they? If they’re not on the menu, how do you know if any exist?

Here’s a site full of DVD easter eggs and how to access them.

yes, they’re called ‘Easter Eggs’ because they are hidden. You have to find out from friends or websites how to access differewnt ones. Usually, they are accessable by a ‘combination’ of sorts you have to type into your DVD remote (up, down, left, right, enter) -kind of like the old video game cheat codes.

Hm. I found an “Easter egg” on Red Dwarf disc 1 completely by accident.

Well, with about 200 DVDs, I guess I have my work cut out for me!

Thanks.

Probably the first Easter Egg was when Atari employee Warren Robinett, bristling at Atari’s insistence that none of its programming staff be individually identified, snuck his name into the game. He had to hide it well enough that the bosses wouldn’t find out when testing it before release, so he included an invisible object in one room which has to be taken to a certain spot in another room, whereupon his name becomes visible.

Since then, people creating software have stuck all kinds of little extras into their products, sometimes with the knowledge of their employers and sometimes not.
