DVD has no sound

It’s Dark Crystal. I can’t remember if I bought it new or used, but it’s not a bootleg. I’ve had it for a couple years, never played it (it’s creepy!), loaned it to my daughter and she says there’s no sound. Other DVDs are working fine on their player.

Any ideas what might be wrong, or if it can be fixed?

You’re not watching the deleted scenes, are you? I think they have no sound.

I’ll check with my daughter. She said she put the disk in the player and the disk started playing even before she pushed any buttons on the remote. Odd, huh?

Not necessarily. Some old, bare-bones DVDs automatically play the movie without any menu.

How old is your DVD? Some early versions of The Dark Crystal had a problem with the sound mix being “out of phase”, though it only affected the bonus materials. Plus, you’d still be able to hear sound, it would just be extremely quiet.

I had this problem with Sin City. Apparently, the default sound output wasn’t one compatible with my setup. I had to go into the audio settings for the DVD and change it. BTW, this has never happened to me with any other movie.

I’ll get the DVD back and see if it works on my machine.

KGS, I’m not sure how old it is.

Thanks everyone, for the ideas.

DTS sound encoding played on a player not able to decode DTS will not make sound. Check your DVD for a DTS logo.

DTS is falling out of usage - I suspect licensing costs, the DTS players are always more money.

Dolby Digital has filled the gap, I believe, for 5.1 sound encoding.

Some DVDs that default to DTS have non-DTS soundtracks, too. That must be the “Sin City” issue mentioned above.

Do you have the “Superbit” release of the DVD? (Silver box, no extras)
I believe the superbit version only had the DTS track and no other.
