I am going to be moving to the US soon (to marry Brynda) and I was hoping to be able to bring over my DVDs. I don’t have many and I could prolly get rid of them but obviously would lose money.
I want to know how easy it is to get a multi region DVD player in the US. AFAIK, over here (UK) it is not too difficult with some shops selling modified DVD players, or offering a modification service. I have no info on the US though.
If anyone can recommend a good multi region DVD player or a shop which sells them, or alternatively, a good US player and somewhere I can get it modified, it would be really helpful.
Apex 1500 dvd players are the dirt cheap players for the US. We can’t talk about modding them on the board, of course. Sometimes I see instore that Circuitcity.com has these or another generic legal multiregion dvd players in stock for about $70-80.00 Thats a big electronics store as well as an online store.
Does your current DVD have the ability to switch between PAL/PAL60/NTSC? IF you can set it to NTSC, then just buy a power converter and take yours to the States. I’ve used a power converter for my stereo system for 3 years and have had no problems- it uses less electricity than an electric shaver. (but I went the other way- US to Europe)
The only other thing you’ll have to do is use an SKART-to-plug adapter. They sell them at camera shops because it is what you use to plug a camcorder into your TV.
I think if you need multi-region, and PAL/NTSC conversion that the Malata n996 is the way to go. I know that AV Deals carries them, but I’d look around at some other dealers as well. The Apex does multi-region with the expert menu, but it’s really not a very good player. I have one and the think tanks on any DVD that’s not totally vanilla (especially ones with branching).
The n966 has progressive scan, Dolby Digital, DTS, PAL/NTSC output, multivoltage–all sorts of good stuff. I’d recommend asking about this over on the DVD Talk Forums, they could fill you in on all the details of the Malata and the other region free players (Apex, Skyworth, etc). The consensus seems to be that the Malata’s the best of the pack though.
