Browsing some DVDs at Amazon, I’m finding some labeled as Region 99. Not finding anything leaping out to explain from a quick Google perusal. What’s Region 99 and how do I know if my DVD player will play Region 99 DVDs?
An Amazon search for titles with Region 99 in the title (which I believe is where the information you are referring to comes from), lists something just over 1,000 titles.
I randomly clicked on about 10 from the first two pages, and they were all:
- From Sony Pictures
- Actually Region 1 in the technical specs.
Apart from that, they seemed to cross all genres, some were on sale, some were not. Some were in the 4 for 3 deal, some were not… I would suggest Sony Pictures being a place to look for more information.
Technically, for multi-region DVDs there’s no “Region 0,” even though many use that term. Maybe Sony decided to call their version of multi-region “Region 99”.
I dunno, just guessing.
:: bump ::
Anyone?
My guess (and this is just a guess), is it is a “special” code used by Sony to label region 1 discs incompatible with multi-region players.
That’s what my 20 minutes of googling tells me.
Your best bet is to ask Amazon why it is labeled region 99, as there doesn’t seem to be any such thing “officially”.
And now I am positive:
No, no, no. DAT is tape, not DVD.
How do they label their Blu-Ray DVDs?
I opened up my latest Sony DVD
My player’s extra fancy, and it’s region-free
But the screen was dark and empty, 'cause the bottom line
Is I’ve been RCE’d with DVD Region 99
