DVD-ROM drive won't refresh contents

I’ve got a Samsung DVD-ROM in my computer that works fine, other than not recognizing any CDs/DVDs other than the first one put in it. That is, if I boot up the computer and it has the CD for, say, Diablo II in this drive, the computer won’t recognize any other CD/DVD that I put in it; it sees any new disc as the D2 disc, even down to displaying files in subdirecories, but the files that are actually on the new disc don’t show up until and unless I reboot. It’s like it’s retaining the FAT (do optical drives use a FAT ?) from the first disc.

This isn’t a problem with my other optical drive (a Sony DVD burner).

It seems like a hardware issue, but it doesn’t “feel” like one. Is there any way that this is a software issue ? And if so, what can I do about it ?

Have you tried pressing the F5 key to “refresh” the contents of the directory?

If it’s the same situation I had, it’s a problem with a couple of registry entries. There are a few days to deal with it:
[ul]
[li]Reinstall the ASPI drivers. (Which I found didn’t always work…)[/li][li]Find a utility to edit the registry for you.[/li][li]Edit the registry yourself.[/li][/ul]
For the latter, check out this link, which will tell you what registry entries to modify. (Yes, I know that it says it’s for a ‘missing CD/DVD drive’, but this solved the issue for me.)

Have you by any chance installed any CD burning software at about the same time this started happening?

This also happens with a few methods designed to disable windowsXP autorun, though you’d probably know if any of those had been run.
