Dwarf Fortress 2010!

The only true good thing on the internet today is a Dwarf Fortress update. Just downloaded it, and about to embark. Whee! Anyone else getting in on this?

So many changes!

My dwarves decided to embark with nothing but prepared dog brains to eat which I found both amusing and disturbing. Anvil is only 100 not 1000 now, which is definitely for the best but it certainly makes it harder to decide what skills and items you want to begin with.

The new job screen with submenus is a godsend!

I have not really accomplished much yet, but it’s looking really good so far. The only change I don’t like is the old space to exit menus has been replaced by escape but I think you can change that in the keybindings so maybe I’ll just revert it.

I used to love the game. But after the change a couple years ago to make it 3D, with levels, I could never get a society to function at all.
Maybe I’ll give it another look to see if the AI handles different levels better. We had a lot of fun with a shared game a couple years ago

This release seems fairly buggy so you might want to wait a while before giving it another try or use an older version. For example I just ended up with two miners on the same embark who happen to be enemies of each other’s civs. They don’t fight, but they cancel their jobs and run away every time they see each other which is very annoying. Interestingly enough, their relationship screen lists them as friends :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, my first fort is already lost - I couldn’t figure out how to get the military to work, so some vultures stole most of my food and everyone died of thirst. I would have survived anyway, but for some reason the dwarf caravan never showed up to resupply me.

Man, I have been waiting for this for a long time.

Strike the Earth!

now if I can figure out how to get the Mayday set into this version I will be down…I seriously cannot handle the asci

Here you go:

I can confirm that this version works. The only problem is that after you generate a world, you need to close Dwarf Fortress and restart it, otherwise a few characters don’t display properly.

“Forgotten beasts can escape from the underground and try and pass themselves off as gods, gaining worshipers and taking control of civilizations”

Greatest changelist entry ever.

thanks, thats not quite the one I am used to but some of its the same.
one question, the version I was playing came from Mayday’s own website and had some things different…that now that I think about it probably got dropped because they are no longer needed.

just have to change that stupid esc = done bit and swap it for space and I think I am set.

Ok so I downloaded and am trying it. And I’m trying that tileset. But I have forgotten everything, how can I figure out what the stone type under the cursor is?

NM, I found remebered K finally

I just cannot find a good place to start

One of the big changes in the new version is that every site will have caverns/magma/underground rivers/etc - you just need to DIG DEEPER. Plus, apparently Bauxite is no longer the only magma-proof stone. All of which means there are a lot more good sites around.

Anyways, first impressions - I’ve started a modest fort, sealed myself in (fucking zombie marmots), and found my cavern system. I’m really having trouble remembering the menu structure, and unfortunately, the wiki is pretty fractured right now, with all the older stuff having broken links, and the new not being complete. Doesn’t help that there are a bunch of new jobs/tasks that I can’t figure out, of course. Still, it’s slowly coming back.

ok one serious issue, Channels now have slopes, so you cannot dig out a tunnel and drop a channel across it to stop things coming in because they just go down one side and up the other…grrrrrrrrrr

Yeah, I noticed that. Rather annoying. I’ll be finishing my moat soon, and need to use a wall to seal that last bit instead.

Or you can build a floor above the ramp to seal it off.

Is hunting broken? I have a guy with hunting as his only job, I have a crossbow and bolts, and there are mountain goats wandering around, but he does nothing(and I need bones).

I think I saw something to that effect, yes.

If hunting isn’t working, how about using traps? Trap them, tame them, and butcher them.

I have some traps out, but they arn’t doing much, they catch rats.

I had an immigrant ranger show up. and go hunting till she ran out of bolts, then started sitting on her ass, so I guess they just wont pick new ammo up.

Well I payed a good bit into my game this morning. It’s as fun as always.

I never did get the hunter thing straightened out, so I didn’t get my bone in time and the dude went insane. But other than that things are going good.

I am having good luck on my other strange moods. Now having a legendary Gem cutter, legendary gem setter, legendary weaver, legendary leatherworker and legendary stone crafter. So I have an almost complete set of the least useful masters. Legendary carpenters, masons, metalsmiths, and weaponsmiths are so much more useful. But I can’t complain to much.

and I was reading about the Dwarf Therapist. Woohoo, usually my games got so unweidy with micromanaging workers when I used to play. I can’t wait until they get it ready for the new release.

I freaking love this game.

I’m essentially waiting for Dwarf Therapist to be compatible, and for a few less bugs.

Besides, my 40d16 fort is still not finished with the cast obsidian colossus of myself.
