Dwarf Fortress! ("Oh no; not again!")

Saw some good news today: Dwarf Fortress is getting graphics AND is coming to Steam!

They are finally shedding the text interface in favor of some pretty sweet tiny graphics; I think that’s the best move they’ll ever make. Apparently they added music as well.

I am very excited about this and cannot wait to play the new updated version.

They’ve also posted a FAQ:

Sadly, there is no definite release date yet. My fingers are crossed that this epic time-waster comes along soon eh!

This has been in development for a while. If I remember correctly, the only reason they’re doing this is so that they can afford health insurance. Otherwise it would have been free forever.

What a fucking country.

They probably noticed the millions of dollars RimWorld brought in and decided they wanted a piece of that after all.

I’m not sure graphics alone will give DF enough accessibility to compete against RimWorld. It also needs a good UI instead of that keyboard-only stuff. (I understand it is really fast when you’re 100 hours into the game.)

The original game is and will remain free.

In our society, everyone needs money and I have no problem offering modest support for them and their endeavors. (And for me, the graphics will be an enormously enjoyable improvement in gameplay.)

Which has a new mod that allows multi-level building, along with older mods for Dwarf-related items, turning that game into a Dwarf Fortress clone.

Worth pointing out that for ages you could download the original game along with a convenient bundle of graphics mods, sound mods, management scripts, and other utilities. The graphics were there if you wanted them.

I love my Lazy Newb Pack.

I gotta say that, while I love the idea of Dwarf Fortress I just always found it too impenetrable and difficult to operate to be fun.

RimWorld scratched that itch for me. I hope DF can manage something similar.

I got as far as flooding some ground to create a garden then got lost.

Been playing the hell out of RimWorld lately, though; waiting for that multi-level mod to be finished before enabling it.
