Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, to star in Big Trouble in Little China remake

It’s like leather bucket seats, it’s double the price.

Well for one thing, the entire “kidnap straight off the plane” thing has to be changed. It isn’t happening.

There’s something wrong with their face.

Brilliant application of probably my favorite line in the movie. Well played.
Count me among those who have no interest in seeing a remake. Whether or not he was the actual hero, Jack is certainly the focal character. And I can’t see anyone playing a better Jack than Kurt Russell. I still can’t decide if Kurt played the role brilliantly, or if he was just a brilliant casting decision.

That said, a big part of the movie’s charm was that it didn’t take itself too seriously. Maybe Quentin Tarantino could pull it off:
Lo Pan = Christopher Walken (Balls of Fury)
Jack Burton = Brad Pitt (I’m not his biggest fan, but he could do it)

Mr. Russell played the role brilliantly, IMO. It’s a markedly different performance than any of his previous films, and he nailed the “obliviously self-absorbed (but not a total douchebag) macho American” perfectly. His facial expressions, his mannerisms, the slow drawl in his voice… all perfect. We aren’t watching Kurt Russell; we’re watching Jack Burton.

I think the entire plot revolves around the kidnapping of Wang’s fiancee. Be that as it may…

Absolutely. Which makes the hero/sidekick role switching funnier.

He played it brilliantly. A not quite over the top John Wayne parody.

He wasn’t the hero, he was the comic relief …

Its going to be a little hard for me to watch the Rock getting his ass kicked by Chinese guys a foot shorter than him and 100lbs lighter. I’m just afraid it would throw off the movie. Other than that, I’m excited about the remake, I even made a thread about this movie when I finally bought it on DVD like last year. One of my all time favorites!

Things I’d like to see:

  • Cooler special effect kung fu brawls

  • Crazier Chinese wizardry

  • More powerful Storms

  • Don’t take itself too seriously

Oh, I don’t know. In the light of recent revelations about the TSA, it might just, er, fly.

Besides that, it’s all in the reflexes.

Maybe a TSA agent can have the line “Hey, where’d you get that thing from?”

I had to rewatch the original last night. I’ve been thinking that some of the stuff may not be considered “P.C.” nowadays.

“some” is not a bad quantity of objectionable material from a 30 year old bit of pulp celluloid. But specifically what? The fact that every Chinaman is a Confucian philosopher and Kung-Fu master?

The hero is an ass-kicking little Chinese guy who gets the girl at the end, and his sidekick is an All-American lunkhead. That wasn’t a bad piece of subversion for 30 years ago.

Eddie is kind of useless.

And a whole lot more!

I think there would be people who would say that the gangs and some of the other portrayals are unflattering stereotypes. Since everyone gets their panties in a wad about everything these days and I’m sure there would be some complaints. (Aside from the “don’t remake this” ones)

Given his performance in Be Cool, he could very well pull it off.

Emma Stone, perhaps?
