The fourth time in one week a local black man driving a BMW was pulled over he refused to show his licence. He did eventually but only when a sergeant arrived. He got a ticket for over $500 and decided to fight it. The ticket actually said that the reason was the he was black, but had a French name. There are probably 100,000 Haitians (nearly all with French names) in the Montreal area. Not only was the citation overturned, but the magistrate ruled that racial profiling was per se illegal. But of course, no cop was disciplined. From the photo in the paper, I infer that the guy’s wife was white and that may have contributed to the harassment. My own take is that in the future the cops will be more careful what they write on the citations.
