E-Cigarette how-to explained, please?

We finally got my elderly mother to give up her 50-year, 2-pack-a-day habit a few years back. I got her some Joyetech 510 automatic batteries, those little heating elements (atomizers?) that screw onto the battery, and the little plastic end that you put in your mouth that also has foam that holds the juice. I don’t know that vaping is 100% healthy, but I think it’s easier on her COPD, and the risk of her burning down the house is reduced as well(a decidedly non-zero risk these days.)

That worked great, but as the years roll on, things are changing, companies I used to order from are disappearing, and it’s getting harder and harder to find the parts from dealers that look reputable, or find them at all. It might be time to modernize, but I don’t really understand it all. Tanks, “dripping”, cartomizers, clearomizers, shmearomizers. “Dripping” sounds messy, and I don’t know what a “cartomizer” is or what the difference is between it and a “clearomizer.” If we go the “tank” route, what else do we need with that besides the battery?

I need something dead simple that an techno-phobic old woman can use, that’s not disposable (for price reasons), and that’s also about the same size as a a cigarette. The size is important. I bought her a bigger battery last year that lasts almost all day, but she doesn’t use it because it’s too fat. It needs to be about cigarette-sized, easy-to-use, if not easy to fill and set up (I can do that for her if necessary), and very important, it needs to be an AUTOMATIC battery. She has difficulty coordinating the pressing of a button with inhaling. It would be comical if it weren’t so sad. I’m not even sure that problem has to do with her advanced age.

If anyone could give me a little primer on what these parts are, how they fit together to form an e-cig, and which style/brand might fit the bill, I’d really appreciate it.

It’s probably not necessary to shop online for ecigs these days. Most convenience stores now carry several different brands of ecigs distributed by the big tobacco companies. If you are going to insist on cig-a-like size the local 7-11 or whatever may be your best bet. Walmart also carries several brands.

Thousands of vape shops have also opened around the country in these past couple years – you might well find a local one if you check around. Vape shops will tend to have more advanced setups than the cig-a-like style but may have something you/she finds attractive.

The cartomizer is a small tank with a wick that holds more fluid that the foam things.
I usually buy on Ebay, although there is an ecig store near me, and some smoke shops have them.

I’ll look around when I can, but for a few different reasons, I’d prefer to shop online.

So all I’d need is the battery and the cartomizer? That would be all the parts needed for a working e-cig, not counting the charger and juice? The one she’s using now has three parts.

Would you say the tank is better than the foam things? Easy to fill, doesn’t leak?

I appreciate the responses. I tried reading up on them, but what I found seems to start at a higher level than I needed.

Three parts? Mine have the cartomizer and the battery.
The tank lasts longer. I buy liquid from Magic Mist by mail. It comes in a plastic jar with a squirt nozzle. If you don’t tight the mouth piece, it can leak. They tend to get saliva and drops of the liquid built up, and I plot in on a tissue, or if my Wife isn’t around, on my jeans.
The clearomisers/cartomizers did to quit working after a week or two. Here is a picture.

I don’t mess with cigalikes, so can’t help you there.

But the next basic settup is like so:

Battery

coil

tank

The coils will eventually burn out or the wick becomes unusable, you can rebuild it yourself with kanthal wire and cotton or just buy new coils and wicks for a few bucks.

And of course the nicotine fluid.

Main body: this is either your battery or the thing that holds your battery. It will either need a charger or it will need rechargeable batteries. I’ve found that I prefer the type that charges on a micro b connector. The kind you screw in and place in a usb charger ARE NOT ALL THE SAME. As I discovered when I blew one up. I’d look for a micro b charging battery for ease. However, if you are determined to have an automatic, that severely limits your options. Most batteries are not automatic for safety reasons.

Tank: this holds the juice and the coils. I’m partial to Kanger tanks because they’ve recently standardized their tanks to fit the same coils. The coils will need replacing about once a week. The tanks you see at convenience stores and the grocery store with the long wicks are messy to me.

Juice: you’ll need some. I started off with one that was close to my cigarette of choice, but found that I like the flavors better now. The goal is to decrease the amount of nicotine til you’re off.

In view of your requirements, I’d order one of these:

If your mother likes it, I’d get another, maybe two. For me, their battery life isn’t that good.
Value vapor is the only shop on line I’d use. They’re fast and dependable and sometimes they throw in a gift.

The advantage of going into a vapor shop is that most of the clerks in the ones I go to are avid former smokers who understand the want to quit and will spend time with you finding the right stuff. And many have sampling areas where you can sit and try different juices. It’s a MUCH better experience than buying on line even for an old fart like me.

For sanitary reasons, it’s a good idea to drop your mouthpieces in a container of water and add a denture tablet at least once a week. I get a long container, make it two tablets, and add the hard plastic straws from my double insulated drinking glasses with lids. Oh, and the coffee filter basket. And my toothbrush. There isn’t much that denture tablets won’t clean well.

Yeah, my batteries last about a month. I’ve seen ego-t batteries that don’t need a switch, I had two for a while, but I cannot recall where I bought them.

I think your biggest problem is going to be finding a mod that applies current to the coil when the user draws on the mouthpiece. To the best of my knowledge, no such setup exists. The only product I’m familiar with that does this are the Blu disposables. These are completely self-contained units that are discarded after the juice is exhausted. They were popular when vaping first became trendy, but I haven’t seen anybody using one in a long time—they’re just too expensive. That’s one of the primary benefits of vaping over smoking, aside from the obvious health benefits—it’s ridiculously cheap. If you make your own juice, you can vape your brains out for about 20 cents a day if you omit the flavoring. Even if you add flavoring, it’s only about twice that. I think a disposable is your only option, as your mom may not be able to refill the cartomizers or do routine maintenance on them. Also, even the smallest units are about the size of a small cigar—much larger and heavier than a cigarette or a plastic disposable e-cig.

There is an eGo-T that is automatic. Google around for it.

There’s also Vuse which you can find at 7-11. They are incredibly simple and they have prefilled cartridges. I had a coupon for a free one. It was ok, but not as good as my high tech. I’d buy one in a pinch (mother coming to visit for a month, ex-husband resurfaces, zombie apocolypse), but I’d never switch completely. As I said, the automatics just aren’t as good.

I’m quoting this particular message because I appreciate the cleaning tip. I always had issues with those non-disposable straws from reusable sports bottles, so much so that I just don’t buy them anymore. I’ll remember the denture tablet tip in the future!

I appreciate everyone’s help and info. I’ve spend several hours on my computer today, checking in here periodically while I surfed. I was looking for info in all the wrong places, as it turns out. Should’ve known better. I’ve been looking at the dirt-cheap websites and they don’t always tell you what the item is threaded for, much less anything else useful. I supplemented that uselessness by reading vaping forums, and those guys are so into it they build their own vaping gadgets. Not much newbie info to be had there.

Once I started checking out the fancier, pricier web-stores, I found they held your hand quite a lot more. In addition, I started checking out Youtube vids, and things started making sense. I should’ve known Youtube would have a bunch of info, but I don’t like getting my info that way. I can read much faster than they can present a topic, and I find it aggravating to sit through intros and banalities. It’s also faster to skim a post/article to see if it’s relevant, something that’s more difficult and time-(buffering. . .buffering)consuming with a video.

It seems they now combine the fluid-containing section with the heating element (atomizer). The ones she’s been using have the two parts separate - you buy them separately, fill the cartridge, drop a couple drops on the atomizer, then put them together. The cartomizers, or clearomizers, seem like an easier setup.

After a great deal of surfing, I found some 510-threaded automatic batteries (the slightly longer, slightly more powerful ones) on clearance for $4.99 each. I got 5, and five clearomizers for $3.99 each, and 5 coil replacements for the clearomizers. Even if the clearomizers are a bust and I have to use something else, it’s still a decent price just for the batteries. If they do work out, it’s the best deal I’ve had yet on these things.

So, thanks again. If I didn’t get this right, I wouldn’t hear the end of it until the next thing I didn’t get right.

where?

I hope store links are allowed. I’m not affiliated or anything.

Try this site. It’s where I got most of my info when I started vaping.

Most places sell kits and to be honest they’re not that expensive (certainly cheaper than smoking!). I gave up smoking in January and replaced it with vaping. I’ve found several orders of magnitude easier to completely cut-out cigarettes this way than going cold turkey, though I suppose the real test will be in the next few months when I plan to slowly phase out the vaping.

I’ve brought my vaping equipment from specialist vaping shops and tobacconists.

That’s another advantage of vaping over smoking—you can do a controlled taper by gradually reducing the strength of the juice.
