I get this fairly often ever since I got my new Mac and I’m sending an e-mail. But nothing else has changed, other than the Mac. I’ve been using Verizon for years and years and I never got that message from my Windows machine.
Or was my mail held up previously, but I just never got a message about it?
Very irritating, and this has nothing to do with the size of the e-mail. The latest one was for just a few sentences of text.
“421 Resources temporarily unavailable” (or 451) is a mail server error. It can mean several different things. In some cases it’s related to spam blocking. Does it give you the number 421 or 451?
Double check your mail server configuration in Mail. Verizon should provide a list of all the settings.
My WAG is that before it was queued up with multiple retries before you’d get a message like this (and it never hit the max retries), but now it’s trying to do a demand push of your email, not seeing the server (could be a slow speed connection, or DNS issue there) and spamming the message to you. My iPad does this as well sometimes, though my Windows 7 workstation with Outlook doesn’t. That could be another thing…if you are using Apple’s Outlook client it’s got some connectivity issues, at least, again, my iPad does.
Just my WAG here. I’m not a Mac guy OR a systems expert.
Could be an authentication issue between the Mac and your Exchange server, though that is, again, just a WAG. It SOUNDS like a server issue to me, and authentication might be it. Or it could simply be an issue that’s cropped up lately, and has nothing to do with the Mac. Like changing your favorite soda just before your car starts giving you trouble.
Do you use Hotmail? I’ve been getting that message for the past couple of weeks, and I haven’t changed my computer (Windows XP) or my ISP. I’ve been on Hotmail for about 15 years, and this is the first time I’ve had any problem with it that lasted longer than a few hours.
Yes, the message you’re seeing indicates a delay at the server. If you read through that Verizon link you’ll see several references to Verizon having email server problems in the last few days.
I read it. Thanks. I’d say this is a problem that manifests itself a couple times a week.
I guess I probably had this problem before, when I was on Windows, but was just unaware of it as I wasn’t getting any error messages. I noticed it immediately after I started using a Mac a few months ago, but had never seen it during many years of using my Dell. Ignorance was bliss…
