E.R. - September 26

He also rocked in “Robocop” where he had one of my favorite lines: after using some kind of super gun that shoots missles and blowing up a car with it, he crows, in a manner one must actually hear to appreciate, “iiiiii LIKE it!” Kinda like Tony the Tiger says “iiiittttts GREAT!”

And I was yelling “OH FUCKING HELL!!!” - my hubby got crabby with me because he thought I was watching another terrorist attack or something.

I like Abby’s blondeness.

As I was getting home last night, I was putting the key in the door when I heard at least two members of my family screaming “Oh my God!” “Did you see that!” and other assorted exclamations.

And even though I saw the final 45 minutes of the show, it’s obvious to me that I will never NEVER get the scene with Roman vs. the helicopter until I actually see it myself.

I don’t know if just being too picky or what, but after Romano’s arm came off, I turned off the tv in disgust. I’ve become increasingly disenchanted with this show. Last season I didn’t watch it much at all because I just didn’t care for the soap operaish tinge it has taken on. It has become so sensationalized it’s just disgusting. I don’t care who’s having the latest romance with whom. I don’t think we need to see cars crashing into buildings or other crap like that. And, I really don’t care to see folks getting body parts chopped off either. Why is it such a radical concept to think that folks can be entertained by good character development and focus on crucial issues in medicine, rather than explosions, violence, and graphic scenes? I just don’t understand what these folks who’re producing “ER” are thinking. When “ER” came out, it centered on the treating the patients and on the ethical issues that doctors face. Now “ER” is just a mess. I seriously doubt I’ll be watching much more of this program again. [sniff]

I don’t think he’s necessarily blaming anyone, I think he’s just really, really bitter at the prospect that this may be a career-ending injury – he may never have the dexterity required for complicated surgeries again. I’d expect him to seethe in a self-pity anger kind of way.

He didn’t seem to have any family or freinds to come and visit. So his career as Robert “The Rocket” Romano is the only thing he’s really got.

He’s gonna be a little cranky for the next while.

You still won’t “get it” in the same way that the rest of us did, because you are expecting it. 75% of the reaction was due to the surprise factor, it was the definition of “coming out of left field”. You’ll just find it icky.

They certainly were vivid in the portrayal, with many long shots of the raw meat of severed body parts.

I agree in that I think he’ll turn even more bitter now. I mean for crying out loud, he’s a surgeon who just his arm. That’s his passion. (Being a surgeon, that is).

And I must add that Abbey was looking hotter than ever.
And I agree that this was probably one of the most shocking scene I’ve seen on TV.

Happy

From what I’ve heard, Crichton himself said the show is supposed to be about Carter-it’s really his story.

And then it just evolved into a multi-player story.

Personally, I think Carter and Luka are hot. Hear me? You KNOW there can’t be an ER thread without me stating that!

CARTER AND LUKA ARE HOT!!!

I haven’t seen it-but I think my mother taped it, so I’ll watch later.

Another moment of “good Romano” was when Corday was somewhat freaked out about the prospect of her hubby’s immenent demise, saying something along the lines of “I can’t go through this!” Romano said something like, “Is he your husband? Then you can go through it.”

But there have been a lot more “bad Romano” moments then good.

Since I didn’t see last night (darn no-NBC-getting dish satellite), my votes for most intense episodes still go Mark Green and the impossible birth, and Gant’s suicide. Your story reminds me of the latter, when the next morning a friend at work says, “That episode was so slow; what happened at the end, I was flipping back and forth” At least she had seen 59 minutes of it and could understand how shocking that last scene was in contrast to the noneventfulness of the rest, but it’s not the same as that all-out shock of seeing it and having the realization dawn on you of what has happened.

I thought the graphic “arm sliced off” scene was really, really gratuitious. How was that any more or less necessary than seeing the incredibly traumatic ways any number of patients have been injured or killed? It pissed me off because it was totally unnecessary.

The best thing I can say about the new season so far is that, because I’ve been consistently underwhelmed by it, I won’t be wasting a lot of my time watching TV.

Did anyone else who was watching the show not actually see the arm come off? As soon as he reached down for that clipboard – I’m not sure, but I think they started that “thump thump thump” sound and maybe started a little slow-motion camera work at that point, and there was the briefest moment when all you could see was his hand reaching for the clipboard and the blur of the tail rotor spinning – I knew this was not going to be good. I just covered my head with both my arms and kind of whipped around as fast as I could to face the back of the couch, because I knew I did NOT want to see whatever it was that was going to happen.

I’m another Romano fan, and I understand celestina’s reaction. I did not turn the tv off, but I did think, after the show ended, that I’m not sure I’ll stick with this series. It seems as if the show’s producers don’t believe that they can hold onto the audience unless they resort to shock tactics like this, and if they don’t believe in their show, how can I?

How can you possibly be consistently underwhelmed about the new season when so far they’ve only aired the season premiere?

On another board, where they review the er episodes,it has been said of Dr. Romano, that he is like the father who can’t/won’t say that he loves you but deep down inside he cares a hell of a lot, and he shows it more through his deeds and words then anything else. Yeah, Romano can be a major dick, but as he showed with Reese, and with Elizabeth, he does care. I especially like the show late in Elizabeth’s pregnancy when after going through a very long surgery, Romano brought Elizabeth pizza and ice cream and told her that she did a good job.
Spoilers*********

Romano does keep his arm, but he has to face the prospect of being out of surgey for a good while and watching Elizabeth take over.

Dr. Weaver gets pregnant, I haven’t heard who the father is yet.

Luka starts banging all of the nurses and ends up with a sexual harassment complaint being filed against him.

I like Abby’s new hair style/color too.

Someone posted a spoiler/rumor that Romano was going to lose an arm in a helicopter accident after the end of last season. I didn’t know if I should believe it or not. Once they set up the scene on the roof I knew it was true, so it didn’t come as a big surprise to me. Still, pretty effective. Some CG, but well done.

If you really want to see Paul McCrane’s range, rent FAME. He’s so completely different (along with a full head of red hair) that it’s hard to recognize him.

Maura Tierney (Abby) looked incredibly hot, she has the look. Her and Carter will be interesting, but I’m really amazed at how many doctors/nurses hook up. They have to bring in some more outsiders, like Kerry’s love interest. Hope she’s back too.

WSLer –

Because I said “season,” not “show.” I’ve also watched Smallville and Gilmore Girls and Friends and CSI and several other “not-to-be-missed” season openers, all of which were IMO pretty darn missable. Therefore, not much TV in my future.

I missed it too, but entirely by accident! During the middle of the argument scene, I dropped something, and when I looked back at the tv, there was a severed arm lying on the roof, and doctors standing over Romano. I taped the episode, so I suppose I could rewind the tape and watch it, but I’m not sure I want to. My brother even watched for a few minutes until it was clear that “little prick man” (I don’t know exactly why he calls him that since he rarely watches, but he means the guy is a jerk, not under-endowed) was going to live.

brondicon would you believe it took me until the 2nd or 3rd time I saw “Leonard Betts” to figure out it was the same actor? :smack:

I have a question about Romano’s care after they reattached his arm.

He’s still out of it, and Kerry and the surgeon are talking about the poor blood circulation in his fingers, and that they may have to reoperate.

I was under the impression that leeches were used in the post care of limb reattachment to help blood circulation. I saw a special on TLC about it, and they used them because the anti coagulant gets the blood flowing for hours, even after the leech is full and falls off.

Why did no one at the hospital consider leeches, instead of more invasive surgery?

In retrospect (which is, of course, cheating), it was actually almost predictable. In fact, as they were arguing over the helicopter, I saw their surgical gowns caught in the updraft and I thought, They’d better be more careful around those rotors. Plus, the argument with Luka was pretty trivial, a classic misdirection as to the intention of a scene.

And as soon as the blood started spurting, I predicted how Paul McCrane would play the rest of the season: as the self-pitying surgeon deprived of his dexterity (or sinisterity, more accurately). Or else they’ll play opposite that expectation, which is equally predictable! Gah!

(NEXT WEEK: A doctor learns the difference between LIFE and DEATH! Don’t they teach that in pre-med, says I?)

Spoilers for RoboCop:

Oh come on, Romano got off light on E.R. In Robocop, his character gets doused with toxic waste, and then as his flesh starts to drip away (in a cheesy, low-budget, 1987 flick way), Clarence Boddicker, the head bad guy (I think he’s now on That 70’s Show), runs him over with a car and his body explodes like if you hit a Jello mold with a baseball bat. It was so gruesome (although in that cheesy, slasher-pic way), that most versions of the film use the shot where Boddicker steers out of the way.

Slight hijack – Where was Jillie Mack (Mrs. Tom Selleck)? I saw her name in the opening credits, and even though I’ve watched this episode twice (once while taping it, once watching the tape with Mr. S) I didn’t spot her. Did anyone else?

Damn. I can’t wait for the repeat.
I was watching the show but I was geeking out (probably on LJ or something) and my back was turned … not really paying close attention.

I turned around and saw the chief of staff guy poking around the end of a severed arm. Eww, said I.

Then they showed Romano all drugged out missing an arm. Ooh, said I.

I figured they might kill somebody off with their “shocking surprise you won’t believe,” deal. Close but no cigar.
