early bird date, Palm Springs style - drinks, dinner, Starship, home by 6

So we kid about people in this town eating dinner at 4:30 and going to bed by 7.
I am now a part of that group.

We went to the Spa Casino in downtown PS and saw Starship this afternoon. The show started promptly at 4 PM. A good turnout, not a full house but not bad for a Sunday show. Mickey Thomas looks good, especially when you factor in the staggering fact that they played a show in Orlando last night. No sleep, he said, just cracked a few beers and ran with it. Except, no running either, or dancing for that matter, cuz he hurt his knee somehow. OK, now it’s sounding like a geezer show, but actually it was pretty great. Of course, they sang all their
“hits” - seems like they can only do Starship stuff, nothing from the “Jefferson” era. I really enjoyed the old Elvin Bishop tune “Fooled Around and Fell In Love”, wow does that bring back memories. And they ended the show with the much maligned “We Built This City On Rock and Roll”, frequently listed as the worst song ever written/sung. Mr. Beckwall cringed a bit, but then again he’s 47 going on 19 and thinks this older stuff is, well, old. I promised him the new Pavement CD in return for being my date, probably the only way he would consent to going with me.

Add some drinks and a quick dinner, and we were in the front door at home by 6.
Beat that, you young whippersnappers…

Whoa. 4:00? Really? Was there a second show or something?

I’m not a big Starship fan – except I love Blows Against the Empire, which is very evocative of my college years. I’ve turned a couple of whippersnappers onto it (one a Rusted Root fan, the other a baby Deadhead) – they both got it.

If Jesus had lived in Florida, he would have had the early bird and not the last supper.
