Early mosquitoes---pipsqueaks?

Here in beautiful Northern Ohio, where we’ve had a weird May, with many a day in the 80’s, much rain, humidity, etc.(very uncharacteristic), I just sat on the porch for about 15 minutes tonight. Got my hands and arms bitten by mosquitoes.

My observations and question: I perhaps was bitten 5 times. Normally, in the mid-late Summer, the welts swell up quickly, and I have a rather large, itchy, group of bites. NOt tonight. These are wimpy bites. They itch a slight bit, but I don’t have well-defined bites that look light bombing targets.

Why do these early skeeters produce such wimpy bites? And the ones in July-August cause such irritation?

Colibri? Anyone? I didn’t search for an answer, as I am disenchanted with the current archive search engine.

Here’s a page on mosquito species of Ohio

Different species of mosquitoes emerge at different times during the spring and summer. These can differ in the severity of their bites. My best guess (and it’s only a guess) is that the mosquitoes that are biting you now are a different species than the ones later in the summer.

Thank you, Colibri, and yike! The link failed to mention the registration numbers on the abdomen on some Ohio mosquitos. Bloody palms are a sign of bravery in the Buckeye State. :smack: I doff my hat to the valiant Ohioans. Oh, yes. My ma was born there.
