Earth Alliance Cruiser vs. Star Destroyer

One blast from the Excalibur’s primary weapon would just about vaporize a Star Destroyer. (Excalibur wouldn’t be able to do anything for a full minute afterwards, but with no Star Destroyer around to worry about, who cares?) But that’s why I wanted to keep the Excalibur and the White Stars out of the picture – I wanted this to be a fair fight.

Friends FYI, the latest issue of CINEFANTASTIQE magazine features a complete B5 retrospective. The issue includes articles on every feature the the series plus reviews of all episodes. The price is steep $11.95 but for a dedicated fan well worth it.

Is this any different from the season-by-season reviews of each episode that have been published in book form? (I forget the title of the series; I believe each book has the same title as the Season Title for the season it covers.)

I just realized something. A Super Star Destroyer (like the Executor carrying Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back) is about 5 miles long. The Babylon 5 station is about 5 miles long. Coincidence? Or … conspiracy?!

I, for one, think it’s a conspiracy. I say we force ALL Sci-Fi series into one chunk… Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Earth: Final Conflict, Starship Troopers… that way, we’ll be able to easily settle any question of “Such and such Vs. This and that” just by demanding an episode about it.

Battlestar Galactica would launch all of its Viper fighters, and they’d spend the next 5 minutes using the same 20 seconds worth of special-effects clips over and over and over again – and after the rest of the ships were done laughing at them for being caught in this film loop, they’d vaporize the Battlestar.

Starship Troopers would park all of their ships right next to each other, so that the slightest nudge would send ship A smashing into ship B, which would smash into ship C, which would smash into ship D, etc., all the way down the line until they all blew up.

Captain Picard would, of course, surrender.

I know all this stuff about Capital Ships & the Earth Alliance may look impressive, but no FIFTY of these vehicles would last one hot minute against a single Nal Kaseta (the name means “Bringer of the Morning Mist”). The ship itself has less than half the overal mass, length, & breadth of either of the other contestants (and conversely, twice the manuverablity). Its chief weapon is a sigle forward mounted, 360 x-y pivoting particle cannon. The cannon itself is a mere 500 megawats (a scalple next to the blugeons & maces of the other ships mentioned), but advantage lies with the Kaseta itself. With a twin polarized “singularity” power source, the ship can move from any point in space (at any angle) to any other point in space (again at any angle) in less than a “zero” perceptable time interval. Other wise known as universal mobility, it takes no time for this vehicle to move anywhere.

How y’all like them apples?

Okaaaaaay … and what universe does this Nal Kaseta come from?

Those are the official play-by-plays. For an outsiders, “nitpicker’s” and far more humorous series, get “The Babylon Files” 1 and 2 - includes synopsis of each episode, list of details, errors, and quotable quotes (notably from Kosh and Ivanova). Way worth reading.

Evidently, I rock.

Why get it on tape, when you can get it on laserdisc?

(Too bad the laserdiscs aren’t in the 1.77:1 aspect ratio that the non-computer-effects scenes were filmed in, though.)

Incidentally, how do The Babylon Files compare with the Lurker’s Guide to Babylon 5 website?

Because I don’t have a laserdisc player, and they keep jerking us around if it’s going to come out on DVD or not (which would be my preferred format, and I’d buy a DVD player just for this series if I had to).

And the Lurker’s Guide is pretty comprehensive, but it’s nice to have something in book form at the ready when you’re watching the show. I get the impression the Files are funnier - more quips, lines, mistakes, etc.

But so many movies have been released on laserdisc – often in their original theatrical aspect ratio – that may never see the light of day as a DVD!
