Actually, mblackwell may have a valid concern. Living in a high rise condominium, we had to wait for the building to be wired for digital cable for Road Runner to become available. If you have the old school analog stuff, you may or may not be able to get cable internet right off the bat.
I have used Earthlink for a couple of years now and it works fine for me. I never install any ISPs software though. I just ask for the info to configure the DUN and do it manually. The part about them giving out my info to scientologists sounds like BS to me. I have never had a problem
I’ve had Earthlink for several years, and have been largely satisfied. Making the switch from dialup to DSL was long and painful, but eventually worth the wait. The following link has plenty of stories on DSL in general and Earthlink in specific:
