Earthquake!

Yup, that’s exactly what Taipei is like. The stronger earthquakes will start out shaking side to side, and then you start bouncing up and down as the reverberations keep going back and forth through this big bowl-shaped valley surrounded by mountains.

And this is where they’ve constructed the world’s (until recently) tallest building.

Did we just have another one? Or am I just projecting?

Yep, just felt it again, not as strong, only 3 seconds or so. Aftershock?

Or whatever they call it. The home just shook again. Felt about the same as last night, maybe a little less in amplitude.

Felt the aftershock here in St. Louis. Just a little jiggle and the suspended ceiling tiles rattled a little.

So, that’s what an aftershock feels like.

Kind of anticlimactic really.

I was sitting at my desk (Indianapolis, near the airport) a little after 11:00 and thought a driver backed up into the building hard, turns out my driver is standing in the breakroom. I look down at my phone on the desk and it is still vibrating a little then it stopped.

Just a bump and a little vibration, bummer.

Yes, that was indeed an aftershock. Felt it right here at my desk… just strong enough to make my flat-screen monitor wobble a bit.

This is so weird. What next, mudslides? Wildfires? shudder Hollywood agents? This is Illi, not Cali… stop the nonsense!

Our three birds started screeching before the shaking started. It’s not unusual for cockatiels to have “night terrors” so I lay there a moment thinking, “I’ll have to get up and turn on the light and soothe them back to sleep” when the closet doors and the lamp shades started rattling. I wasn’t sure what was going on, and my husband sleepily says, “It’s the cats”. Right. Just then, both cats came running in the bedroom with all their fur on end. By the way, the fierce Rottie/pit slept through it, as did the neurotic pug. I didn’t feel the aftershock, but we were watching “The Astronaut Farmer” in science class, and I probably just attributed any feeling to watching him blast off into space. :stuck_out_tongue:

huh. missed it. if the divemaster hadn’t just called me to tell me, i’d have had no idea. i’m on the second floor of an office building on the far northside of indianapolis.

Wow. Yep, felt the aftershock just now and the original as well. My first earthquake of any sort, ever. Very surreal.

whoa… the local newsies say we had one at 9:03 am, too. missed that one as well. obviously, they’re not penetrating the building structure, which is a GOOD thing.

USGS reports the 10:14am tremor at magnitude 4.5 (pretty decent for an aftershock).

ETAx2: Never mind, it was 11:14 EST. :smack:

Here’s video of a live TV broadcast during the tremor. Appears the epicenter was near Evansville, the strongest in 40 years and felt by some almost 900 miles away in Florida.

oh yeah. the divemaster said the aftershock definitely got his attention. while not as severe as the 5:37 am one, it was enough to rattle the kitchen cabinets, he said. miss kona, one of the four scubakitties we have between us, was NOT amused at any of this morning’s proceedings. he said he definitely felt claws before during and after each one.

mine merely continued imitating furry, breathing catlumps. neither cared in the least.

Springfield, IL

Woke me and Mrs. Homie up. She kept asking “Why is the bed shaking?” while I laid there and collected my thoughts. When it was over, I went outside to look at the trees (I thought it might have been wind and/or a tornado), but everything was perfectly still. About 10 minutes later the local news confirmed it was an earthquake.

Felt the 10:something aftershock here at work, too.

So, if the first one hit at 4:30 Chi time, centered around Evansville, and a definate aftershock was felt a little after 10:00 Chi time, could the next wave be somewhat predictable as to what time and how strong?

Didn’t feel the aftershock.

Try some of this.

Not really, inasmuch as you can’t predict the release of stored energy with all that much preciseness. Especially when that energy buildup is deep underground and only detectable upon its release.

Of course, IANA Seismologist goes without saying, but having grown up in California and been through my fair share of earthquakes and drills, I’d say aftershocks are fairly random in timing. The strength generally subsides as time goes on and smaller aftershocks release more energy.

We were all sitting in English class discussing the morning’s earthquake when the aftershock rolled through. We all went quiet and it took us a second to grasp what just happened.

I think this all lends support to me “Obama is the Antichrist and We Are at the End Times” theory. The epicenter was in Illinois, too. God’s giving Indiana a warning shot for the upcoming primaries.

[sub]I am an Obama support (at least more than the other candidates), btw[/sub]
