It seems the term used may have been “Ladies and gentlemen.” One woman (I almost said “lady”) on the board ‘said she was “insulted by the familiarity with which the candidate addressed me.”’
The fellow who was not hired seems to be minimizing the idea that salary or other terms on employment were the issue.
