Easy fix for North Korea?

President Bush could simply order a nuclear strike on North Korea.

He’s a lame duck, so if Congress tries to impeach him, he just drags it out a bit, then resigns and has his buddy Cheney pardon him.

Seems like the same technique could work on Cuba and Afghanistan, too.

As for the loss of international goodwill, we’ll just shrug our shoulders and blame it on an old administration.

I’m sure he could, but I doubt he or his puppetmasters care enough. If he does something like that, I’d expect Iran to be the target.

There wouldn’t be any point in Afghanistan; where would you nuke them ?

Don’t post things like that.

It makes my bowels lurch.

What you’re suggesting falls under the heading of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. If Bush snapped and decided to do that (and got SecDef to agree) Congress would have him removed from office in less than a day or two. Keep in mind that the Senate doesn’t need to hold a trial, Bush couldn’t drag it out if the Senate decided to do. Pardons would complicate things. Bush doesn’t even need to rely on Cheney. In theory he could pardon himself immediatly after he gave the order.

So ? Do you really think that matters to Bush ? Do you think that there’s the slightest chance of him being punished ?

Yea, good idea.

Yes, and as much as I hate him I don’t think he’s despicable enough to commit war crimes on that scale. At the very least he’d have to pull a Saturday Night Massacre to get the nukes launched.

Well, as far as I can tell, he’s completely amoral, as well as stupid and arrogant. I think that there’s no limit at all to what he would do if he thought it would get him something he wanted. Fortunately, he’s also self indulgent and lazy, or he’d have done even more damage.

Assuming that’s true ( and given his propensity for incompetent yes-men, it might not be ), that doesn’t mean he won’t do just that.

Somehow, I don’t see Russia or China waiting to see where EXACTLY the missles land before they start sending their own.

What exactly would be the point of that? What would it “fix”?

It would destroy part of ‘The Axis of Evil’. As demonstrated by Iraq, Bush is definitely of the “We had to destroy the village in order to save it” persuasion; the fact that nuking NK or Iran or wherever would kill huge numbers of the people he’s ‘liberating’ aren’t a consideration. It’s not like killing 100,000+ Iraqis has convinced Bush that he’s anything other than a hero and God’s Champion against evil.

It would destroy part of North Korea, but:
(1) it would not necessarily end the government of North Korea, and
(2) it would quire likely destroy large parts of South Korea and Japan with a retaliatory strike.

Is the bombing of Seoul and Tokyo something a US president wants to be remembered for?

Which is a reason that he’s less likely to chose NK than Iran for such an attack. Even he and his advisors are hopefully smart enough to realize that. Hopefully.

It’ll collapse on its own sooner or later, which is about as easy a fix as we can reasonably expect.

Hah! I hear there’s a product called Depends that might help with that. And hasn’t the stuff Bush has done prolapsed your anus by now? Or do you avoid the news?

Same could’ve been said about Iraq a few years ago…

And events have proven waiting for Iraq to collapse would have been the wisest course of action. What’s your point?

genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity…

Gee…why is it that so many Bush-haters enjoy it so much?
Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan, etc honestly believed that they, and only they, were the true prophets;---- verily, I say unto thee…the true messiahs---- who would save the planet; after all, if was obvious that Bush was going to launch nukes at 8:00 a.m. the first morning after the election.Only the movie F911 could prevent it.

They not only had the pure, blind, mindless faith of a fundamentalist, they, well…enjoyed being pure, blind and mindless.

And now they have a problem–only 12 months to go,— and nobody has launched the nukes yet.
Help!!! We’re running out of time to save the world!!! Pretty soon we’ll be irrelevent!!! EVERYBODY PANIC!!!
You get the feeling that these sad people genuinely want to see millions of dead babies. And they’re going to be just so terribly, terribly disappointed when they have to live the rest of their lives without seeing a mushroom cloud. I feel sorry for them.

it’s been 60 years, so we can rule out the “sooner”. When so you predict the “later” will be?

It doesn’t matter, because NK doesn’t matter, except to SK. The world can afford to ignore it indefinitely. Kim Jong-Il might be crazy, but not so crazy as to think he can nuke Seoul or Tokyo and live.

I’m prepared to tolerate quite a bit of “later” if the “sooner” alternative is the retaliatory destruction of Seoul and large parts of Japan, with the economic disaster that entails.
