Easy way to impress your friends

If you are like a lot of people, you have from time to time tried to get the index finger of each hand to make circles in opposite directions, but have given up. Well I perservered for a few minutes once and discovered that it’s really not that hard to do. All it takes is a little practice, and you too can show off to your friends. I’ve taught this method to a few people, and it seems to be really easy to pick up.

OK, first start with your right index finger at the point of the circle farthest from you and your left index finger at the point closest to you. From here we will make more of a square, so bring them both straight up to the height of the top of the circle. Then bring your right index finger towards you at the same time as you bring your left index finger away from you, basically switching positions. Now bring them down at the same time, then switch again, and back up.

The idea is to go slowly and methodically until you get used to the feeling, and round out the corners as you do so. Let me know of any success/problems you might have.

Well, that pretty much defines mundane and pointless, doesn’t it.

Water, sweetie, I’ve read this thing three times and I still don’t have the faintest idea what you’re talking about.

But hey, I’m impressed! Oh, boy, am I ever impressed! That thing you do with your index fingers, whatever it is, is totally amazing! Hey, everybody, come into this thread and watch Waterj2 do this thing with his index fingers! It is really something!

I’m just sorry they canceled America’s Funniest Home Videos, because whatever it is that you’re doing, I’m sure it would be a shoo-in for the $10,000 Grand Prize.

Hey, Ma, come and look at this…

I think I speak for the rest of the board when I say:

What???

Actually, I know what he’s talking about. It’s kinda similar to patting your head and rubbing your stomach. The primary difficulty in doing this is splitting the attention of your mind between two completely different actions.

Some other challenges for you, Water…do arm circles with each arm going in opposite directions (It’s really not that hard). Another one is moving your right hand in a triangle motion, snapping your fingers at each corner, while at the same time moving your left hand up and down, snapping each time you do so.

ok I figured out what water was talking about.

First I thought it was something to do with bending my fingers over backwards. Once the swelling went dow I read it again and realised its about spinning his index fingers in opposite directions in the air. Which makes me think three things. 1. Do I get a prize for figuring out what it was about.(I’m pretty sure the answer here is no but I had to ask) 2. How bored was water that he thought about this and figured out how to do it? 3. How bored was I that I read through the statement until I understood what he was talking about and then tried to make my fingers circle in opposite directions? (its harder than you’d think)

I figured I’d try to express in words what is so easily done in person. OK, remember when you were young, and you sang “The wheels on the bus go round and round,” and made the little round and round motion with your hands? Or perhaps you’d recognize it as the “wrap it up” gesture? It’s kinda the same motion as twiddling your thumbs, but on a larger scale. Dammit, if I was drunk there would be a reason for this.

Well, it’s really easy to do this with both hands (and/or their respective index fingers) rotating in the same direction. Opposite directions is much more difficult for the brain to handle, but very easy if you can just ease yourself into it.

And no, it’s not incredibly impressive, just the sort of thing that makes people go “damn, I never could do that.”

OK, for the really basic picture of what I’m talking about, place your hands in front of you. Point each index finger at the other one. Use these fingers to inscribe circles in an imaginary plane halfway between them (imagine standing with your nose against the edge of a door, with one foot on each side of it, and each hand is drawing a circle on its side of the door).
