How so? I would expect them to be ecstatic that a black person took Iowa.
You must not be too familiar with the SDMB - you’re not supposed to say “As a Democrat I sure hope…”, you’re supposed to say, “As a disinterested observer, I think the best thing the Republicans can do for themselves is to not nominate Huckabee”.
Because someone, somewhere, thinks people actually buy that shit.

I don’t know about anybody else but when Hillary ran for senator here in my state I defended her against charges of carpetbagging and voted for her in good faith. When she won I even wrote her to congradulate her and to express my hope that NY was not just a stepping stone to be kicked to the curb when something better came along.
She’s been barely a placeholder as a NY Senator. To me she has no interest in policy or serving her constituency unless that constituency includes nothing but Hillary Clinton.
When I dropped my daughter off at the babysitter this morning, she (the babysitter, not my daughter) said “I can’t believe people voted for a former Muslim”. After my internal :eek , I said “I believe that’s a rumor and a smear tactic”.
She told me that she’s a die-hard Republican and that she’d rather vote for Hilary than Barack. “I can’t see having a ‘President Barack’”. After another internal :eek from me, I snatched my kid from her arms and ran like the wind!*
I’m having a hard time believing that any Democrat could win at this point. I’m not excited about any of the candidates on either side, but I think when it comes down to it, the huddled masses won’t vote for either Barack or Hilary and stick with the devil they know.
*Of course, I’m kidding about that last part. Despite her political views, she’s wonderful with our daughter. But if she comes home with a Huckabee bumper sticker on her Big Wheels, that’s it!
I have the same reaction. There’s just something about Hillary that reminds me of Reese Witherspoon’s character in Election.
He was saying that the racial hatred/divisiveness that they feed on, that is their raison d’etre, may not be as large as they want everyone to think anymore.
Now don’t go comparing Iowa and South Carolina. There’s a lot of surprise being expressed in this thread that a black man was able to win in a 95% white state like Iowa. Don’t confuse rural with automatic intolerance. Iowa tends to be a pretty progressive place in terms of things like homosexuality and race. I know that “live and let live” is something that most people don’t think of in terms of the Midwest, but places like Iowa and Wisconsin are actually pretty socially liberal places for the most part.
I see Barak’s victory important in Iowa because it shows that voters care more about the candidate’s views and skills than the color of his skin.
I really agree with you here. I’m hoping for an Obama/Richardson ticket.
Hillary is, well to call her Lady Macbeth is a bit much, but only a little bit too much.
I do wonder if Hilary would accept a VP slot if offered, or if she would see that as beneath her?
I think that is the point, Obama did win a very white state, if he can now win a southern state where much public common opinion would assume racism is even higher (please think about the Bullshit with McCain’s black baby) it would really convince people that Obama is electable.

But you have to remember that South Carolina, as opposed to Iowa, has a large percentage of African American voters, who vote predominately Democrat.
Tactics like those used against McCain work much better in GOP elections in South Carolina than they do in Democratic ones.
After previewing: What **villa ** said.
Gobama!!
I’m not one of the rabid Hillary haters, but… well, today’s newspaper printed some “Local opinions”—local residents’ reactions to the Iowa results. One woman, shown on the front page, was quoted as saying she will vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton “simply because she’s female. … They’re more level-headed. They’re more other-centered. They’re not driven by testosterone.”   God, that makes me hope Hillary loses.
The track itself is going to morph substantially. Pelosi and Reid will not be stymied by a Republican president and the Dem majority in Congress will surely increase, especially if the Dem nominee is not female. The new horse carries 126 lb, the older horse 250 lb.
Let’s hope he brings it back. I kinda liked Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
Oh I think the Iowa thing is the tip of the iceberg. If Obama can carry the momentum of Iowa to NH, who tends to vote more independently (and one COULD see, if one were to squint, Obama as a more independent candidate) he will take the nomination and then the presidency. The last one to miss the mark that badly was Dole and Gephardt (sp?). I believe, depending on who he chooses for veep (paging miss Winfrey) that with the momentum Barack has the potential to gather, he will be unstoppable. I also believe that this year belongs to the democrats. The republicans will not win the White House. Plus, he has a wife and two small kids, he’s the black JFK. He will win, and I’d be proud to vote for him.
Now, as for Hillary, I wish I could be a fly on the wall, with a camera. I bet as soon as those numbers came in she puked in her mouth a little, swallowed it, and killed and ate an intern.
I think a lot of people were ambivalent about Hillary’s candidacy, and about her, but didn’t want to say anything too bad about her for fear of lending aid comfort to Republicans. Now that she’s no longer “inevitable,” they’re giving vent to the HH they’ve had bottled up for over a year.
I’m certainly not her biggest fan. I don’t think she’s been as effective a senator as NY’s senior Senator, but her office has been very interested in constituent service, from all I’ve read. She even got my vote for re-election in 2006, because the alternative was so much stinkier. (And not simply because he was a Republican.)
I agree - IME, the view on blacks in a place like Iowa is “He’s one of those people who’s different from us” while the view on blacks somewhere like South Carolina like “He’s one of those people, and I’m not a bigot or anything, but they’re all…”
So, I think anywhere in the South is going to be a lot rougher on him than Iowa was.

It drives me crazy that some people seem to think that getting Hillary in the White House is some kind of victory for women. I don’t think it does much for the feminist cause for a woman to ride her husband’s coattails into a position of power. I’m sure there are going to be people…maybe even Clinton herself…who will use this as proof that even a minority candidate can win if they are male, and that people are inherently biased against women. Maybe this is true. I tend to doubt it, but maybe. On the other hand, it could be that people just don’t like her. Imagine that.
