Bart Simpson’s famous phrase was taken from a line in The Breakfast Club. Bender, from Futurama, was named after TBC character John Bender and Nelson ,from The Simpsons, was named after the actor that played John Bender,Judd Nelson.

I never knew that until today.

We were using the phrase in 1971, when I was in college, 14 years before The Breakfast Club

Don’t have a cow, man. Matt Groening said he used the phrase because of TBC line.I wasn’t implying that it originated in the movie.

There’s a surprising number of references to The Breakfast Club in both the Simpsons and Futurama. Matt Groening must be a huge fan.

As well as the stuff already mentioned, Principal Skinner bears a fairly striking resemblance to the Principal in The Breakfast Club, physically at least, less so in character perhaps. Plus the scene where Bender gets involved with some brinkmanship over the number of detentions he’s getting was also repeated almost verbatim in the episode of the Simpsons where Bart becomes a hall monitor.

And in Futurama the episode ‘The Luck of the Fryish’ directly references the movie by having Fry hide his lucky seven leaf clover inside the record sleeve of the soundtrack.

I’m sure there are other nods to it as well, but I can’t think of any more now.

None of which tell us if Barry Manilow knows that you raid his wardrobe.

Don’t mess with the sheep, young man. You’ll get the horns.

Don’t mess with the BULL. (not sheep).
