Eating healthy/organic but not getting ripped off....

Our New Year’s resolution has been to eat more healthily. We want to avoid food which may have residues from pesticides and fertilizers or animal products that have been enhanced with hormones or massive doses of antibiotics. We also like the chance to support smaller farmers who farm in responsible and environmentally friendly ways.

However…

How do I know if I should buy the regular frozen berries (ingredients: berries) or the organic berries (ingredients: berries) which cost $1.25 more? Not just berries, but lots of things…

I am willing to pay for foods grown/harvested s I mentioned above, but not for the same product with “organic” printed across the bag…

Any resources you can suggest or ways to make these decisions?

I guess just go with common sense. You can’t expect yourself to get everything organic.
We try to get as much as possible within reason.
Fruits and veggies we don’t worry about so much, it’s the processed foods that we are concerned about, the fats, the additives, the coloring and such.
You can find organic food areas in normal supermarkets these days and even sometimes products will offer an organic option right next to the regular stuff (like ketchup and peanut butter).
If it says organic it has to meet certain FDA requirements to post it on the product, you can’t just slap the label on something and call it organic.
Do your best to eat healthy and look at labels, but no need to go ape nuts.

Consumer Reports just released their opinion on this very subject. Here’s the short version:
