Ebay's "IT" commercial....

People in various settings mesmerized by something either off camera or veiled or hidden in a box… Then the unvieling… GASP! It’s an “it”.

“Whatever it is you can find it on Ebay.”

I know for a fact, judging by what they charge me each month in seller’s fees, that they can afford a more creative ad campaign.

There’s a new “It” commercial that talks about the creation, marketing, distribution, and cultural phenomenon around “It”. Given I hadn’t seen the other ad (in the OP), I didn’t know it was for Ebay until the end, when the closing tag is quite effective.

I keep expecting to see Gabbo on those “IT” commercials.

I can’t decide whether this or the bursting into show tunes eBay commercials are the. worst. ever. This may be it.

I’m moderately surprised eBay thinks they need to advertise. What competition do they really have? Who is going to eat their lunch if they don’t grab spots on prime-time?

Of course, I didn’t think Microsoft would ever need to advertise its freaking OS business, either. Yet there it is. Somehow, Linux and IBM aren’t impressed.

I think the point is that they have both new and used merchandise. Many people probably still view Ebay as just a source for collectibles and used stuff.

They are in competition with more traditional businesses such as department and specialty stores.

Most of the things I buy on eBay I used to buy from major retailers such as clothing, consumer electronics, CDs, DVDs…

I saw one ad that didn’t mention the company, but I knew what it was for, since it had a notice “©2005 eBay, Inc.”

Look, Smithers! Garbo is coming!

I don’t know; I like them.

I suppose I don’t have any real-world competition to eBay where I live, nor in any of the places I have ever lived.
