Our friend, Wile E told me about this article which I hope you will read
IMO, there really is no one to blame here. What’s that old saying, “Shit flows downhill”?
For quite a while now, it has rolled downhill and hit the ones who know the least about what’s going on and why many of them have to die because of it.
You can say “overpopulation, indiscriminate breeding, abuse, hoarding”, and you’d be right, of course. Those things are still a problem, but we were making at least a dent in them by educating the public.
Responsible pet owners can’t be blamed, because too often their houses are foreclosed on due to lack of work and they must move to an apartment where they either can’t have a pet or have to pay ridiculously high deposits.
Too many of them are turned in, and despite what is said about “No-Kill”, we are running out of room to keep the amounts of pets who could be adopted, and so they have to be killed. No-Kill is a noble goal, but if the economy continues to tank, I don’t see it succeeding.
Did you notice that this article is about a humane society closing? Not a County-run animal shelter - private people who have been doing their damndest to save the lives of as many animals as they can. Traditionally, it is them (the humane societies) who work the hardest to keep them alive.
It sucks. Anyone have an answer?
Thanks
