So, I’m watching A&E Biography on Ed Gein last night, because why not? I’m sitting there with an interested look on my face, eating water ice, as they are telling us how he hanged and gutted Bernice Worden; how he robbed graves and made shade-pulls and bowls and masks from bits of dead bodies; how he had the skinned face of another victim in a paper bag.
Then they tell us how he was taken to jail and asked for some apple pie with cheddar cheese on it and I involuntarily went, “eewwww!”
People, calm down! Ed was from Wisconsin and, therefore, put cheese on EVERYTHING. Including, I assume, Mrs Worden’s liver.
That said, I do not miss cheese on apple pie and dread the possibility of being served it when I visit my mother. The key is to eat the cheese separately while not letting your hostess see it.
I’ve eaten apple pie with cheddar cheese all my life. It is very good.
My dad (from the state of Washington, 'natch) even had a sing-song rhyme about the dish.
Apple pie without cheese is like… a hug without a squeeze… etc, etc
You’re not alone, Eve. kittenln and I watched the show last night and she did the exact same thing.
The utter wrongness of the whole situation didn’t occur to me entil you just pointed it out. Thank you for making me realize that in my wife’s mind, eating apple pie w/cheddar cheese was Gein’s greatest crime.
Oh, come on now! It is an almost universal dish.
Apple pie, slice o’ cheddar cheese, poached egg = breakfast
Apple pie, slice o’ cheddar cheese, vanilla ice cream = dessert
Originally there was a scene in which he asked for apple pie with cheddar cheese, but the MPAA hit the roof. The scene had to be cut or else the movie would risk an NC-17 rating for “graphic and disturbing scenes.”
I don’t know why they even filmed it, did they really think they could subject an audience to cheddar on apple pie?
Apple pie is at it’s best with cheddar cheese. I get really weird looks when I ask for it just about anywhere, though. Since I’m traveling again, a lot, I’ll have to renew my nationwide survey:
Wisconsin / Minnesota - Blink. OK, we’ve heard of that. Here you go.
North Dakota - Didn’t even blink. I think it was on the menu…
New York (Long Island) - Blink, blink. Are you sure? OK, whatever (weirdo).
Alabama - We don’t have that.
You can also put a slice of cheese on a slice of raw apple for a tasty snack.
BTW, I’m from Eastern Washington, and learned from my father, who’s from North Dakota.
