Yeah, everything they did after “what the hell was that bang?” was considered the rescue of the crew, IIRC.
Need to correct something I said. I DID figure him out in “A Beautiful Mind”, the friend and daughter eluded me.

Gene Kranz was on a talk show shortly before the movie came out, and they showed some clips of Harris’ performance. His reaction was something along the lines of “Wow, that guy is as hyped up about the mission as I was! Oh.”
And I definitely agree that few actors are as consistently good as Ed Harris. I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten the Oscar yet.
