That was my favorite performance by a supporting actor. But was it nominated for an Oscar?
Yes.
I want him to win an Oscar - he is really good, and he keeps getting denied, every single time.
Harris was superb in “Apollo 13,” but the winner that year was Kevin Spacey for “The Usual Suspects,” and that was a great performance, too. So, I can’t really gripe about the results. Most years, there are several very worthy contenders for most awards, and 1995 was no exception.
I love Ed Harris. For me he’s up there with William H Macy as a consistently, if unsurprisingly, good actor.
Ed Harris & his Hours costar Julianne Moore both have 4 Oscar nods each without a win. Since both are highly respected in the industry, it is likely is all they’ll need is half-an-excuse to give it to them the next time they get nominated.
And for my money, the Supporting Oscar Harris deserved was in 1983, for his double-whammy in The Right Stuff and Under Fire. The only Oscar he was “robbed” of was for Pollack.
I’m going to be girly, but what the heck? Ed Harris in Apollo 13 - sexy as ALL GET OUT.
It’s the vest. Yum.
And yes, the dude can act, too.
Ed Harris is great in The Abyss. When they’re in the mini-sub that’s quickly taking on water, and you can see him getting more and more anxious…
Heck, he’s been great in anything I’ve ever seen him in. I wanna be him when I grow up.
Uh, considering some of the things Ed Harris has said about that movie, I’d be surprised if he was acting! (Not to say he isn’t a good actor, he is.)
If you liked Ed Harris in Apollo 13, you should read Failure is Not an Option, the memoir written by Gene Kranz, the real-life guy Harris played.
From page 180:
It’s a fascinating read for space junkies. It’s kind of dry; it’s definitely written by an engineer/management type, rather than a skilled prose stylist. But the stories he tells… wow.
Based on the character that comes through in the book, Harris really captured something with his performance.
Adding to what Cervaise said,
My father was on the Apollo 13 rescue mission. When he saw the movie, he said, “They got an actor to play Gene Krantz who looked more like Krantz than Gene did!”
I’ll echo everyone who’s praised Ed Harris’s acting abilities.
Ed Harris is incredibly sexy. He’s an example to all men who are losing their hair – stop fretting about it!
I wonder if Gene Krantz’ vest is in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum… anybody know?
Another great performance-“A Beautiful Mind”. Took me to the end to figure him out.
Has anyone noticed that the older Ed Harris gets, the more he looks like Erwin “the Desert Fox” Rommel? I watch a lot of “The History Channel” and the resemblance can be kind of striking in some of that old footage.
You never see them at the same parties.
Coincidence?
You be the judge…
It’s not just me!
Actually, I think I saw it at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Oooh, Ed Harris is such a hottie!
And Gene Kranz is one hell of a guy. I got the chance to meet him a couple of years ago, when he was the keynote speaker at a conference my company put on. He is a great man, a friendly and consdierate celebrity… a real gentlement. He autographed books for my dad & my kids, and stood around talking with folks for ages after his session.
He walked us through the events of the Apollo 13 mission with a timeline and video/slide presentation. It was harrowing, and we knew the ending already!
Please buy his book. He is amazing and you will love it.
Good to know – thanks.
The rescue mission?
