Ed Schultz is an asshole

Ed is an asshole, no doubt. But he’s one of the better assholes. If he did say this it was his usual mindless blathering.

I’m with Bricker on this.

Twitter is often used to engage in ongoing conversations, similar to this message board, and if the individual tweet that you’re criticizing is part of an ongoing conversation, and the tone or meaning of the tweet changes when removed from its conversational context, then you have a responsibility to provide the full context.

I will say, though, that Twitter users should recognize that, because each tweet constitutes a discrete post, they need to be careful about wording. It’s one reason, among many, that i don’t use Twitter.

As for Ed Schultz, i’d never even heard of him before this thread. The only time i watch any of the 24-hour “news” networks is when i’m on the cardio machines at the gym and, to be honest, while they differ in their politics, they all seem just about as bad as each other when it comes to news values and the quality of reporting and analysis.

This wasn’t part of an ongoing conversation, though. Assuming Breitbart is telling the truth, there wasn’t anything about Gohmert posted until half an hour later.

ETA: I’m not really sure where Fox came into this since they weren’t cited in the OP or anywhere else, as far as I can tell.

I will say my biggest reaction to reading the first part of this thread was…

Wait… Reagan’s Secretary of State has a Twitter account? He must be 100 years old!

Ah, I didn’t see that context on the linked-to image. That makes more sense. I didn’t realize it was in response to a tweet basically saying gay people are acting like Nazis. :smack: Ah, it’s in the quote at the bottom of the post I was replying to. I glossed right over it.

In that case, yeah, stupid thing to get upset about. I’m not a fan of Ed Schultz, but the context is important here. Still, one of those things you’ve got be wary of with social media.

Here’s some possible clarification.

From the link (bolding mine):

In short, for some reason he or his staff snipped part of his on-air quote (that was perfectly reasonable in context) and tweeted it. Looks bad alone, but it was fine in context.

I think at this point we can all agree that there was nothing wrong with what Schultz said, and he’s still an asshole.

OK, so now I’m thoroughly confused. There was no immediate context? That is, it wasn’t a reply to another tweet or something? So it was more like he was listening to someone on TV/radio comparing gays to Nazis, and then he tweeted this in response, without thinking about how the missing context might color the interpretation of his comment? Weird slip on his part, then.

ETA: Never mind. I see it’s elucidated two posts above.

Correct on both counts.

Pit thread over, lock it up.

New thread suggestion: Why Ed Schultz is still an asshole.

At least Schultz is less of an asshole than Gomert.

Ed Schultz might be an asshole but he’s an asshole for the people, dammit!

Dear TPNN: why do you think most liberals, when seeing this, thought “no fucking way?” Here, lemme answer that - it’s because you guys have a consistent track record of pulling this shit! Context is apparently a four-letter word to those on the right.

I would be interested in that thread because I’m not familiar with Schultz and so far based on this thread he doesn’t seem to be one.

nm…

He’s a loud and annoying blowhard. Being a blowhard whose political views I share doesn’t mean he’s less of an asshole.

You got some sort of problem with loud and annoying, pencil neck? One of those liberals who sew leather patches on their Goodwill sports coats and use lilac water for aftershave? Tell me you wouldn’t pay good money to see a Steel Cage Death Match with him and Sean Hannity.

Shit, even Pope Frank’s got one. And George Schultz is only 94. In the prime of life, he is. Youthful, even, for a Republican.

They’re all too old.

To the Carousel with them all!

They don’t. They knew that would be the response, anticipated it, and poisoned the well. Now any of the faithful reading their news will instantly discount counterarguments. It’s just liberals being hypocrites–they can’t possibly have a real point.
