The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau is a big-wave surfing event at Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu. It requires a reliable forecast of waves at least 20’ high. The last time this happened was in 2009.
A 2015 event will take place tomorrow.
Eddie Aikau was a legendary surfer and lifeguard on the north shore of Oahu, credited with saving over 500 people from the ocean. He died in 1978, trying to paddle (on a surfboard) for help from a distressed boat. A now-famous slogan sprang up to honor his commitment to rescue regardless of danger: Eddie Would Go.
