Educate me about/recommend a Blueray player (please)

Time to replace my DVD player. I figure I might as well go with Blueray this time.

Usually when I buy electronics that I know nothing about I just go and purchase a mid-level model that doesn’t have too many negative reviews on Amazon.

But this time I thought I’d ask the dopers to tell me what to look for and to recommend a good one. Here is some info that might be pertinent to the purchase (or not.)

I will likely only watch one movie a week (at most.)
I have a nice 55 inch screen HD TV
I probably will only buy mid-level, not top-of-the-line.

Thanks for all the input!

Step one: it is called Blu-ray.

If you’re on Netflix you’ll probably end up watching streaming netflix more than blu-rays so you probably want to look for functionality differences in that area. I think pretty much every player has it.

I know back in the olden days one difference between players was that one type would access your queue (iow you have to use your computer to make changes) and the other type would have full netflix functionality. I don’t think there’s that much of a difference nowadays.

The higher end models tend to have on-board decoding for the newer multi-channel audio formats. (Dolby True-HD and DTS HD-Master Audio). Only needed if you actually have a 5 or 7 speaker setup, and you don’t have an A/V receiver that can decode those formats.

Good stuff, thanks!

I do have Netflix, and I don’t imagine I’ll ever have a bunch of speakers. But now I know.
