Effects of caffeine

I often feel tired at work. While buying groceries, I noticed various products that were, basically, caffeine tablets promising to keep one awake and alert, etc. This might be good (I don’t drink tea, coffee, or soft drinks, so don’t presently take in any caffeine.)

Would taking such tablets mess up a person’s body? I’m especially interested as I’m a diabetic and don’t want to rock the boat too much, so to speak.

People have different reactions–even a small amount of caffeine makes some people more jittery than wakeful. But, basically, you will feel more alert with a small amount of caffeine. This effect will diminish as you build up a resistance/addiction to it. I think the major problem for diabetics is that caffeine is a diuretic, which is not good.

If you want to try it, I’d recommend starting with a cup of tea. There’s relatively little caffeine, compared to coffee, and tea is good for you as well.

I think you should talk to a doctor about it, especially as you’re diabetic. Don’t take any chances!

I am not a doctor.

But I have never heard that diuretics are inherently bad for diabetics. Possibly cher3 has in mind the fact that many diabetics, when diagnosed, are drinking a lot of water and urinating frequently? This is the result of having excessive glucose in the blood, and once you get your blood sugar under control it usually clears up.

I’ve found that chewing mint-flavored gum often helps me keep alert during those lazy afternoon hours at work, fyi. You might try that.
