Egregious Landscaping Awards

Okay, there’s a house on my block that’s pretty surreal to walk past.

Here’s the deal: The folks that live there planted a tree in their back yard, about a foot away from the bounding fence.

The tree grew up as far as the fence was there to support it, but has been entirely content to grow horizontally ever since it reached the top of the fence.

A couple of years ago, I started avoiding the sidewalk there, because the fence has appeared to be about to succumb to the weight of the tree, and if there are steps I can take to avoid the possibility of being pinned under a falling fence, I’m happy to take them.

Anyway, the homeowner finally did something about it in the last coupla weeks, sort of:

Here’s a crappy pic of the tree. It’s hard to judge the scale from the picture, but anybody under 5’2" has to duck to get under it.

Here’s what they did about it.

Well, it doesn’t look like it’s going to pull the fence down any more, anyway.

The pictures really don’t do it justice. What are these folks thinking? Before long, it’ll be more than just an obstruction to pedestrians-- it’ll be directly in the path of vehicular traffic.

This one takes the cake for me-- it’s even better than the folks down the road who trim their hedges up as far as they can reach (without a ladder,) leaving another 10 vertical feet above that completely ungoverned, so it bushes out to form a canopy. WTF?

Any of y’all got neighbors like this? I love 'em. They make me feel so much less guilty about letting my lawn brown up.

Why you should never hire dwarves to landscape your home.
