Either kill the AVG virus update people or kill me. Now. Please.

Avast here too.
:stuck_out_tongue:

I bought NAV 2005 a couple of years ago but never used it because my new computer had NAV pre-installed. So I try to install it when the old one’s sub ran out. WTF Seems this version uses DRM and will not recognize it was installed because of my previous version.

OK, I installed it as instructed–but the damned Installation Wizard asked me a lot of very confusing questions that I had no idea how to answer, and now I get a message that my anti-virus and update manager are “in an error state.” What the bloody hell does this mean, and why is there no tech-support phone number that I can call so these things won’t happen in the first place?

Uninstall it. Then reinstall. Whenever a question comes up, go with the reply box that’s most prominent – it will be the default “right” answer. Either it’ll be larger, or it’ll have some kind of outlining, or something to make it say “Pick me!”

I was just about to post what ETF did. Go with what is already marked in as far as the installation goes. Don’t let the questions confuse you. They mean well.

‘In an error state’ just means that it’s not been updated yet. If you click the whatsis beside the message, it’ll probably launch the update downloader. That’s what mine said when I’d first installed it.

I did that the first time, though.

Again, every time it asked me if I wanted to update or reinstall, I clicked “yes.”

I e’d the damned company again and asked them what I should do, and to please give me a phone number I can call so they can talk me through the installation, as “tech support” is supposed to do.

My website company, bless their little cotton socks, has great tech support: I called them, and they talked me through updating my website and installing new photos and the whole thing only took a couple of minutes. I don’t know why the hell these damn anti-virus people won’t let their paying customers actually ask them questions!

Eve, try this.

Can you see the colorful little AVG icon in your system tray, at the bottom right of the screen?

If you can, double-click on it. A window should pop up onto the screen. On the left hand side of that box will be three buttons:

Test Center
Help Topics
Check for Updates

Click on the “Check for updates” button. When the little box pops up, click the button that says “Internet.”

It should then look for and find any necessary updates. Because you’ve just installed the latest version of the software, the only updates you should need are to the virus database.

Accept whatever updates it offers, and wait for them to download and install.

See if that works.

OK, can anyone recommend a company other than AVG (bought via grisoft) through which I can get the necessary anti-virus, spam, firewall, etc., stuff that I get through them–but is easier to load, less dishonest and actually has tech support you can call on a goddam phone?

I keep getting vague e-mail instructions (which don’t work) from AVG, along with a blithe “we are sorry, there is no phone support available.” Well, I’m sorry, but there is no business available from me, then!

Bastards.

I like my BitDefender. Others highly recommend Kaspersky. Both got high ratings from websites rating antivirus software that I checked. If you go for BitDefender, be sure to select the version that includes the firewall – the cheapest version (under 30 bucks) has all sorts of other good stuff but not that.
