Well, Der Trihs TRIES to tell women what to do… but they still insist he wear a condom, and it just gives him hissy fits.
Where did I say you were telling anyone to do anything?
Post 18, of course.
And trying to make this thread about me won’t make the Catholic Church any less an anti-woman organization, with a long and continuing history to prove it. I am irrelevant to the matter.
Then my reply is, of course, post 13.
Hmm…what’s the opposite of preaching to the choir? You know, appealing to people to stand up for values they are against? What’s that called?
Futility.
Well, whatever it is, I’m against it.
Somehow I suspect you are a anti-Feminist trying to stir up hatred. (Most Men’s rights activists are good people, but all movements have stupid extremists.)
This
And there are some protestants who denounce Lizzy Winsor’s wacky bunch as being too close to Catholics
You win the internet
Cite, please?
Also, in your opinion who gets to decide who’s good and who’s not? I’m guessing you’ve appointed yourself to the task of making the distinction.
I’ve banned the OP, but I’ll leave the thread open for now in case anyone is interested in the topic. If it continues the way it has been, it’ll be closed soon.
You’re way out of line for Great Debates here. This is a childish insult that doesn’t belong in any other forum - keep these in the Pit in the future or don’t post them at all.
You don’t have to be dumb to be indoctrinated from birth by a self-destructive organization.
I’m sure there are smart people who believe in the Kim Jong Il / Un cult. That doesn’t mean that those people who support it and by doing so make their lives worse are idiots. It means they’ve been lied to their whole lives and don’t have the information and mental freedom they need to think clearly.
I wonder if this will be used later as an example of “waaaah! Liberals in the SDMB are ALWAYS COMPLETELY against religion!”
ETA or if, most likely, it will get ignored in order to claim that “well, YOU might not be anti religion, but you NEVER ask others to tone down their anti religion attacks, which means you are just as bad as the ones who are!”
How is Kim Jong Il and his following relevant to this discussion? In post #10, Der Trihs implied that women who are members of the Catholic Church were supporting an “anti-woman organization”. Obviously all the billion-odd women in the Catholic Church have chosen to be members, unlike those people who are forced to live in North Korea, and obviously at least the great majority of women in the Catholic Church have access to as much information as you or anyone else. So what exactly are you trying to say? Please explain.
Most Christians don’t choose to be members. Their parents misinform them when they are children that God is real, that he can see everything, and that he will punish them if they do wrong.
If you accept those premises, a reasonable person would do what the invisible, omniscient, monster that is looking for an excuse to torture you, wants.
KJI devotion is similar, in that it is based on a series of lies and misinformation, and there is a punishment for diverting from expected behaviors. Although the KJI cult at least actually has punishments.
As I said before, a woman can be a Catholic even though Catholics aren’t very pro-woman, because she believes the misinformation that she’s been given, that God is real, and he demands compliance with His rules.
So, this relates to Miller’s statement that Der is assuming that women are stupid and need Der to tell them what to do. I was saying that women don’t have to be stupid to be Catholics. They just have to believe the lies that the church promotes.
First of all, cite please? Research studies have been done to determine whether childhood indoctrination is what causes people to become members of certain churches. How many of those studies can you cite in favor of your conclusions?
Second, even if what you’re saying is true, every woman still chooses whether to accept or not accept what her parents teach her. Therefore if what you’re saying is true, it would prove rather than disprove that Christians (both male and female) choose to be Christian.
So Catholic women aren’t stupid, they just believe lies while you, in the same situation and with the same information, believe the truth? Isn’t intelligence the ability to distinguish between what is and isn’t true? And if so, then aren’t you really saying that Catholic women are stupid when you say that they’ve devoted their life to a lie while having the same access to information that you have?
I remember growing up a little girl in the catholic church, and wondering why no women were priests. I think that I assumed it was because jesus was a boy…later when I thought I had put it all together, I decided that religions in generally were, by and large, sexist, bloodsucking operations that used people like fuel, yet offered the lovely opportunity of fellowship with like minded destroyers of people’s rights and choices. Well, at this stage, I was always simmering an anger and a bitter hatred toward all religion- especially the catholics religion. It could be that the OP banned poster is going through a similar stage as mine, or my first impression might also be correct-that it was a phony diatribe.
As a former Catholic myself, I do believe Catholicism is sexist and I do think men and women who abide by the RCC are sexist to the extent they go along with it, defend it, and support it. And I vote against it when there’s an option, which there usually isn’t.
I’m baffled at the idea that seems to be floating above that women can’t be sexist and oppressive of women, but whatever.
It was not floating above in my mind. Sexist, oppressive, and even racist. I worked in feminist organizations, side by side with women who saw the few token minorities within their own ranks as beneath them. We (the women of color working in the organization) noticed it, confronted them on it, and were received by their complete lack of awareness. It can and does happen, even among women who ought to know better.
If we take Catholicism as a “sexist organization” and declare that no member of it should be elected to public office, then that means Joe Biden has to go. Clinton went to Georgetown, which is a Jesuit school, so he shouldn’t have been president either. Kennedy was also a catholic, and so were his brothers. Within the current Congress we’d have to kick out Maria Cantwell, Patty Murray (leaving my state with no Senatorial representation whatsoever), Tom Harkin, John Kerry, Mary Landreau, and 136 members of the House of Representatives, including 96 Democrats. We’d also have to kick out all but three members of the Supreme Court.
If we apply the same standard to Mormonism, Harry Reid has to go.
And of course, let’s not forget the number of presidents and other politicians who have been Masons, which doesn’t admit women - so no George Washington, no Teddy Roosevelt, no Franklin Roosevelt, and no Truman. Al Gore’s a Freemason, so I guess it’s a good thing Bush beat him after all - we might’ve had a sexist in office!
Let’s not forget all those people who are anti-SSM, thus showing their homophobia. Obama, out you go! No pun intended.
Nancy Pelosi, Catholic and secret woman-hater-- you’re outta here!!
