Election Day Omnibus thread

“Immigration” is simply a euphemism for " brown people", and I don’t think the Democrats would gain votes from persecuting their own base. Nor is there any point in fighting Nazis by becoming Nazis.

Trump did.

And it’s unlikely the Democrats could win them over under any circumstances.

Yeah, okay, so they thought, “Okay, he’s still got my vote.”

That doesn’t really improve the situation. In any previous election, had the Democratic candidate started coming out with nonsense like this, they’d have lost in landslide. Lots of Democrats would have said, “I don’t like Bush/Romney/McCain, but at least he’s not fucking insane!”, and either switched their vote, or not voted at all. Trump’s supporters didn’t do that. How do you reach a person like that?

People keep saying, “Oh, they should have focussed on the economy and immigration!” Except they did focus on that. It didn’t help.

Not being snarky here, I’m geniunely curious-- what religious views of theirs did they think trump was in line with? Because I have never heard anything more than the most half-assed mumbled general platitudes from trump when asked about anything to do with religion. Maybe they appreciated trump’s helping the Chinese economy by having his scam bibles manufactured there?

OK, that last part was a bit snarky.

The usual. Opposition to abortion and LGBT, while feeling that his presidency would support traditional old-fashioned values and maybe pay lip service to persecuted Christians in foreign nations.

Hate women, hate anyone not cishet, hate, hate, hate.

Just talking about the non-maga voters- Inflation, & border security.

And FYI- looks like trump has won the popular vote also.

I was wrong about Florida- yes, true, i said Harris only had an outside chance of winning, but I was SURE the vote would be close. Instead, it was a landslide.

For all the good it did, we might as well had Biden .

IMHO, at least the election would have been closer.

Well, there’s three ways to analyse your statement:

  1. Republicans are imbeciles, but the Democratic Party was so incompetent that they lost to a bunch of imbeciles.

  2. Republican voters are imbeciles, but the Republican Party leadership was better at appealing to the imbeciles than the Democratic Party leadership, which again concludes that the Democratic Party was incompetent.

  3. US voters are essentially consumers and were offered a choice of a product. You’re passionate about the product you prefer. Most US voters are and had their minds made up before the campaigning began. However, a significant amount responded to the campaign/product sale. Those consumers weren’t imbeciles, but made personal choices and the product they chose was based on the product marketing.

I’ll also note that the Democratic Party won in 2020 and lost in 2024. If that was due to an increase in voting imbeciles, it either means that the number of imbeciles in the US increased over the past four years or the non-imbeciles voting for the Democratic Party has decreased. Neither prospect reflects well on the Biden/Harris administration.

2020: White man.

2024: Black woman.

America is just that racist and sexist.

Here’s the reality: My kids are taking this SO MUCH better than my wife and I. This shitshow is their only reality. My son was born two days before Obama’s first inauguration, and my daughter was born two years later. Oh sure, they knew from a very young age that there was a president, and his name was Barack Obama, but the first election they remember was 2016. They really have no reference point for America being “normal” with normal presidential campaigns and normal presidential candidates. They know where Trump stands on the issues, and that he’s not a good person, but…what else is new? This is their only experience as Americans. Three presidential elections, with the orange goon running in all three. And he’s won two of them

Therefore, I’m trying to keep my anxiety and anger away from them as much as possible. I don’t want to create stress where very little currently exists. I heard my son laughing with his friends on the phone earlier, and my daughter is currently out jumping on the trampoline, screaming and laughing with her friend. It’s just another Wednesday.

Question that’s been on my mind since about 1 AM:

Does the “Blue Wall” even exist any longer? Should we stop calling it the Blue Wall? For the second time in three elections, Michigan + Wisconsin + Pennsylvania went to the Republican, and even when Biden won it in 2020, the margin was very narrow.

If a wall is falling more times than it’s standing, it’s not a wall anymore.

I don’t think that’s true. Since you haven’t provided any evidence for this claim, I’m not going to take it seriously.

It seems like you really hate these people.

Of course I do, they want me dead. Along with most of the rest of humanity.

It never existed. A lot of assumptions were made about Obama and the coalition of the ascendant that were just not true.

That being said, future Republicans will not be able to win with Trump’s coalition. As with Obama’s coaltion, they turn out only when he’s on the ballot. 2028 is gonna be REAL interesting. Totally clean slate for both parties.

I’m not convinced that wasn’t thrown out as a red herring. It cost next to nothing to put out there and the left spent far too much time and resources keeping a spotlight on it in their efforts to discredit it rather than focusing on something that needed attention. Nobody I know believed Haitians were actually eating cats. Certainly some microscopic percentage of voters did, but they were never going to vote blue to begin with.

Wrong animal. Not a red herring but a dog whistle. It doesn’t matter if people thought Haitians were REALLY eating dogs and cats. What matters is that it reenforced the notion that brown people from other countries are unknown and suspicious. For too many people, this meant “He gets it. He’s one of us!”

Do you really think that gained Trump voters? I think it was a stupid part of a speech and anyone who reacted positively to it was probably already a Trump supporter. My guess is that it probably cost Trump votes.

On the other hand, what was Harris’s foreign policy towards Haiti? Did she actually provide a riposte? I’m sure Haiti is a marginal issue to the US voting public, but did she try to win on the issue? Or did she just rely on media commentators to call Trump stupid and ignore the underlying concerns about illegal immigration?

A better phrase. But the meaning is the same. It was thrown out to draw attention and waste opposition time and resources.
