The solution to Republicans lying is to disenfranchise “a percentage or so of voters?” What lesson do you think Republicans will take from that?
Okay, back up your claim. The idea CA takes too long is a claim straight from trump-
What was unusual was that Trump announced that his Department of Justice was investigating the count: “Why the vote counting DELAY???,” the president posted on his social media account. He suggested that the state’s Democrats were somehow cheating so two candidates he favors — Republican Steve Hilton in the governor’s race and Spencer Pratt in the nonpartisan mayor’s race — would be bumped from the top two slots and therefore ineligible for the November general election.
“You see what’s happening in California, they’re rigging the election,” he told reporters during an Oval Office gathering Thursday.
Trump’s posts prompted a response from Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose press office posted a clip of a CNN video explaining how the nation’s most populous state prioritizes accuracy and accessibility over speed, drawing out the count.
In fact we already know it is gonna be Hilton vs Becerra. We knew that Tuesday.
Maybe other states should take similar diligence with their voters and votes.
California is the most populous state and the third-largest, geographically. Why wouldn’t it take longer to count than other states?
Exactly, and we have vote by mail.
Some other states dont seem to care- whoever the President selects is the winner. ![]()
I exaggerate, of course.
So, every State needs to count their votes faster than the average State? I see a potential problem there.
He’s sundowning and remembering the '80s and '90s when the news networks all knew Reagan/Clinton were going to win before the polls closed on the west coast, and assuming that that’s the natural way things are supposed to work.
Now if Steyer overtakes Hilton with those ballots arriving by mail, el donald could get the cult into a complete meltdown. As it gets close, he may just order the postal service to take a week off.
It could happen, but it would be meaningless. The primary for governor ir over and done.
It is gonna be gonna be Hilton vs Becerra, and Becerra will win in November.
Ballots need to be postmarked before election day but they still count if they arrive within the week after the election. It’s not likely but the run-off in November could be between Becerra and Steyer.
It is absolutely bizarre that someone would criticize the California process for taking time to get it correct and doing its best to give everyone a chance to vote.
You say that it could happen, and then you say that it’s gonna be something else. Which is it?
I misread, Becerra and Hilton have gone back and forth over who has the higher % in popular vote. If Becerra overtakes Hilton again, that would be meaningless.
It is gonna be Hilton vs Becerra , and Becerra will win in November.
This is true. Steyer catching up and dropping Hilton to third would be a real shake-up though. As a procrastinator in California, I know I am not alone. I used a drop box on Monday night. It depends on how many people put their ballots in the mail instead at the last minute.
390,000 and counting Vote-By-Mail Ballots Received after Election Day thru E+7 as of noon today.
That would be, but it is far more likely that Steyer would just swap with Becerra. ‘Far more likely’ at this point being highly improbable. He’s winning in a very few counties (SF, Marin, Santa Barbara), but he’s not cleaning up anywhere. Just slight margins of victory in a few spots. He really needs a very unusual late tranche surge. If late votes break heavily for the Democrats (and that often happens), it might be that Becerra and Hilton switch spots. But I still expect Steyer to be trailing in third.
Steyer gave it the old college try. Y’know, if college try includes spending $216 million. But probably for naught. And oh, what a spectacular waste of money that is probably going to be. He could have funded a boatload of charities. Or given it to me!
It’s not like that money disappeared. It meant that actors, film crews, writers, make-up artists, editors, etc. had work and could buy groceries. Most of it went to people who don’t need it and likely don’t deserve it, but what are you gonna do? That happens everywhere.
NPR is calling Becerra as winning the top spot in the primary, but is not yet calling the 2nd spot. The percentages of the vote that they report so far* for each of the top 3 are:
Becerra 28.8%
Hilton 28.4%
Steyer 21.1%
I’m not really understanding how they can be so sure that Becerra will stay ahead of Hilton, but not that Hilton will stay ahead of Steyer. 0.4% difference vs. 7.3% difference. I don’t get it, but being NPR I’m sure they have a reason. They say it’s because Steyer has been gaining as ballots are counted, but I’m not seeing it. I’m not the only one, USAToday, which called Becerra 16 hours ago, is quoting an expert that Steyer’s share is not moving.
In other stupidity, Hilton has called on Governor Newsom to establish an emergency ballot counting squad to speed things up, so that California won’t be embarrassed by slow returns. Newsom responded that it is concerning that a candidate for Governor doesn’t know that the Governor has nothing to do with counting ballots.
*the story is time-stamped at 7:00 pm PDT, which is 28 minutes ago as I write, but I don’t know the timestamp of these particular totals. Well over 3 million ballots remained to be counted.
Late-counted ballots tend to trend Democratic Party in CA. Might be as simple a denser urban counties releasing larger numbers slower or just the traditional less enthusiasm for mail-ins from Republicans. Hence Becerra overtaking Hilton and more likely to stay that way. Steyer is just not picking up enough to pull up to Hilton - 7.3% is a lot, considering Becerra is picking up many of those Dem votes as well. Though it’s notable that all three are seeing their percentage shares increase from election night. That may indicate late voters went more strategic about going for one of the big three.
ETA: Though that last is an assumption on my part that might be invalid, depending on what order they’re counting.
The system changed during covid and never went back. Every registered voter now receives a ballot in the mail. We can mail it, take it to a drop box or take it to a voting center. There are far fewer voting centers than there were polling places in the past.
This is my (urban) county. Others may be different. Not sure if it’s the same throughout the state.
